Kind of a mix bag.  In February 2012, I had a roofing tile blow off.  Bill came over and gave me a reasonable estimate and said he would do the work the next day.  However, he heard on the radio that a snowstorm was coming and came back that afternoon and fixed it.  I was pleased with the price, quality, and promptness of the work.
I called him in September 2013 to fix some leaks and repair some damage.  He came right over to view the job and said he would get back to me with an estimate.  I have not heard from him since.

Ayer was helpful and knowledgeable when doing the work. However, roofers left debris throughout the yard--it was a mess. I've had a great deal of difficulty getting him to return to fix problems since the installation of the rubber roof. One workman came by a couple of years ago, reglued some seams and remarked on the shoddy workmanship of the installation before he realized that the company he was working for did the work! Called again this year and paid $250 for I don't know what as the roof is leaking worse than ever. What's more, estimates I received said that I need to replace porch joists and rafters because of the poor roof installation, for example, a drainpan wasn't initially installed under the 2nd floor slider. Now I have a HUGE problem with a rotting roof. NOTE: Not sure about cost of initial installation; it was completed about 10 years ago.

I called Ayer Brothers for a roofing quote and received a call back the next day from John, the job estimator. He came out promptly and then provided us with an quote within 24 hours (by email). We decided to go with them as they were available to start the work within a week, and we wanted the job done right away. The work was completed while we were on vacation, so I don't know how long the job took to complete, but we returned to find a lovely new roof. There was a small amount of roofing debris around the property, but we had expected this. There were two minor details that still needed to be addressed: replacement of elbow in downspout and a skylight flashing issue. These items were resolved within the week. Overall, we are completely satisfied with the work Ayer Brothers performed. The new roof looks great!

BILL AYERS, AND HIS ENTIRE CREW, WERE PERSONABLE AND RESPONSIVE FROM THE INITIAL CONTACT. THEY SENT A FOREMAN OUT WITHIN 24 HOURS, PROVIDED A WRITTEN ESTIMATE WITHIN DAYS OF OUR CALL, GAVE US REFERENCES, AND PROVIDED ADDRESSES WHERE WE COULD VIEW THEIR COMPLETED WORK, AND SEE EXAMPLES OF THE SHINGLES WE WERE INTERESTED IN USING. THE WORK WAS BEGUN WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF OUR INITIAL CONTACT, AS PROMISED, AND COMPLETED 3 1/2 DAYS AFTER ITS START. TARPS WERE USED TO SHIELD THE HOUSE FROM DAMAGE, PLANTS WERE ALL PROTECTED, AND THE CLEANUP WAS AN ONGOING PROCESS, AS THE CREW MOVED FROM SECTION TO SECTION. WE DID FIND SOME ROOFING NAILS, AND SMALL SHINGLE PIECES AMONG OUR LANDSCAPING, BUT VERY FEW. THE COST OF THE NEW ROOF WAS NOT CHEAP, BUT FAIR AND IN LINE WITH WHAT WE HAVE PAID IN THE PAST. AND THIS CREW WAS MUCH MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND EXPERIENCED. THEY HAD WORKED TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME, AND TOOK GREAT PRIDE IN THEIR WORK. WE RECOMMEND THEM HIGHLY.
