Behind the wood paneling was a spaghetti of 50s-era (cloth-covered) wiring which wasn't up to current code. Since the walls were down, we decided to have all of the old wiring replaced and bring everything up to code.
We got estimates from several contractors. Julio's proposal was not only competitive, but also detailed (one contractor had a single line-item along the lines of "Replace basement wiring"). Julio spelled out every single item he was proposing to do. After deciding which items we did and didn't want to do, we came up with an agreement.
The work was initially supposed to be done a few weeks after we agreed on the proposal, but he was able to find a three-day block in his schedule the week after to do the work. He worked from Friday through Sunday to get all of the work done. Work that he did included:
* replaced all old wiring
* removed all old receptacles and installed grounded receptacles at the proper distances along the walls as required by code
* replace a 60-amp wire to a subpanel with a 100-amp wire (old wire was too small according to current code)
* replaced two smaller subpanels for one apartment with a single larger subpanel
* changed the location of some light switches
* added a new ground wire from the electrical service to the water main
* installed a new light in one corner of the basement
* replaced a backyard/driveway motion-sensing security light (unrelated to basement work)
He couldn't add the new ground wire without turning off service to one of the units. Since the tenant was home, he scheduled a time to come back later in the week after normal business hours to finish the work.
After the initial work, I realized that there were a couple of lights that I wanted consolidated into a single switch (not Julio's fault, we just didn't plan well). When Julio returned to do the grounding work, he rewired the light switches at no extra cost.
We're extremely happy with the quality of the work that Julio did, as well as his hard work and flexibility in terms of scheduling. We'll definitely use his services again in the future for any electrical work we need performed.
I showed him the bathroom features I needed fixed, and without even looking at it he concluded that it couldn't be fixed without breaking the wall. Ironically, just recently JJL Electric fixed the same features for me in just a few minutes.
Mr. Rivera then attempted to fix one of the plugs in my bedroom and did such a poor job that, again, I had to pay another electrician to have it fixed.
