"Mr. Orr quoted installing 30-amp generator inlet box for $1,000 and 50-amp for $1,300. I agreed on 50-amp one. He did not want to be paid by personal check, credit card, even bank cashiers check. He accepted only cash. I agreed. For permit, he said his hourly rate is $250 and two visits to town office would cost additional $500 for permit and stated I do not really need it. Considering he is in Angis list licensed, prescreened, I accepted the offer without permit. He installed the service. No receipts, no insurance information, and with my acceptance, no permit. He did not even try my new generator after installation to see if everything works fine. It was partly my mistake, though. I feel humiliated now. No one should work on panel without town permit. I had to call another electrician after the work. The cable from inlet to panel was 8-3, not 6-3 gauge for 50-amp inlet. I called Mr. Orr and requested a proper gauge cable or reimburse me $300 for the lower grade work. He did not want to come, saying it is a 45-minute distance. He agreed to send me $100 by his personal check, saying I would not have any problem with my generator's output (The Westinghouse WGen9500DFc Dual Fuel Portable Generator with CO Sensor produces up to 12,500 peak watts and 9,500 running watts), dividing 9500 watts by 240 volts. He said I do no;t even have 50-amp output anyway and I should not worry about it. Now, another electrical contractor who replaced the panel to 200 amp, replaced the 8 gauge to 6 gauge, as well."

"Tough outdoor location to install a Tesla EV charger, but he got it done with exceptional attention to detail. It looks great. Communication was excellent throughout the process. He proposed multiple installation options."

Customers say: Quality work

"I hired Matt when I was in the process of converting from a natural gas wall oven and cooktop to electrical versions. There had to be a lot of rewiring done, and he and his men did a great job. They arrived promptly at the agreed time to do the preliminary work and then arranged to come at the same time as the appliance installers to finish the job. Matt even took the time to fix my doorbell for me when I mentioned that it had not worked for years :-) It was clear that they are incredibly competent and the job went very smoothly. I would definitely hire them again if I need electrical work done in the future. Thanks Matt!!"

"Jason and his team with Cotti-Johnson did an excellent job updating our electrical boxes, installing the washer/dryer hookup, and getting us setup with a generator! Sam, our assigned electrician, even took the time to go through the entire operation of the generator from A-Z. I would definitely recommend them for any electrical work!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.
