It could have been better. The water heaters are leaking because there is supposed to be a pump on them which he never installed. When I called him back, he wouldn't answer.

They started on time and finished on time. Very respectful and professional. They carefully considered all my requests and fulfilled it. The system is running beautifully. The challenge was to run the ducts through very narrow passages because it is an old house and they did a very good job without taking any extra space from the house.

Ed and I debated between going for a ducted minisplit or a ductless minisplit.
The costs were relatively similar but one involved drilling through a stone wall twice or more, whereas the other involved cutting through the floor. Also, the ducted seemed more aesthetically pleasing with floor vents instead of ductless heads on the wall. Floor seemed easier right? Unfortunately that wasn't really the case with many issues with joists changing directions and finding areas to cut the ducts in the floor. It was really a tough time with the plaster and lathe ceiling and the cluttered basement.
Ed's guys worked their butts off. The job took considerably longer than expected but Ed held true to his price and they completed the job and cleaned up excellently after they left.
This is the 3rd time I've used this company and they have been excellent each time. I'm not sure they'll want to work in our building again after this job though given how challenging it was but I would definitely hire again.
Looking forward to selling my window units!

Our condo association finally made the switch to gas and Ed gave a competitive quote for the installation of a new burner. Our boiler was only "apparently" compatible with 1 type of burner per the boiler company. The burner didn't have the right attachement to our boiler initially (mistake on my end) but Ed was accommodating and rescheduled it the install once we received the piece.

Marco and the other worker worked diligently for many hours in the basement to get it done and worked well with the start up guy when he arrived to fire the burner. It was a difficult install to retrofit this new burner on the boiler but they did a great job.

Certainly will use them again.

He was a very nice guy, but it seemed that they sub-contract the work. Some of the work needed to be re-done to make more room for the water heater. When I asked when I should call to schedule follow up maintenance and they replied that it was not necessary which seemed odd to me it gave the impression that they don't stand behind their work. They used a sump pump to drain the radiators and furnace and then it backed up and they came and drained it into the sink. Maybe they could have used the sink to begin with. Overall it seemed disorganized.
Response from Mathews Brothers Plumbing & HVAC
"We were hired to install a Weil McLain 91% efficient cast iron boiler and 45 gallon Superstor. The best part of the Weil McLain GV series boilers is that they require no maintenance. Therefore there are no yearly service contracts required. If a boiler breaks we fix it! We believe we are doing people a favor by not getting them involved in costly service contracts. We hired an electrician and a disposal company to take out the old boiler and oil tank. These were the only subs, quite typical for such and installation. Also we installed this boiler in November. We set the new boiler up next to the old boiler to run the gas lines and vents so the customer could use all of her oil and we could do a same day changeover. We did have to move the boiler over a foot when we took the oil one out. In our defense, all the oil was burned and the customer never spent a night without heat. We installed the condensate drain in the sump pump, which is allowed in the plumbing code. Usually it drains into the ground, but the sump pump bucket was clogged and the pump was broken. We moved it to the laundry drain. It would be easy for us to go in pull out the old boiler, have the customer lose heat for 1-2 days and then finish. We respect the fact that no one should go through a night without heat, so we take the harder route and install new systems while the old system still runs. This adds a day to the installation, but nobody has ever spent the night without heat or hot water."

I had used these guys in the past successfully so called again and this time was very disappointed.
I wasn't told at the time of scheduling the appointment that there is a 2 hour minimum charge and I made the mistake to assume I would be charged for actual work performed. The plumber doing the work spent most of the time out in the truck or in my front yard on his phone so I started to worry about subsequent charges. He also couldn't give me a quote when I asked. I called management a couple days later about the service and invoice only to hear about the minimum charge without any further reduction to compromise.

Lack of transparency around charges and desire to improve customer satisfaction is my reason for posting. Maybe the job was too small to bother.
Response from Mathews Brothers Plumbing & HVAC
"We were called to fix a problem with the customer's kitchen sink. We should up on time and fixed the problem. It required parts we did not have and we had to make a trip to the supply house. With the trip the call was over 1 hour. Therefore it was a 2 hour charge."

After the huge snow storm with extreme cold, I was desperate for ANY plumber. Ed Matthews (1) responded, (2) came on a weekend (3) sent two crews on a Sunday and a Monday to do the two stages of work. Everyone was professional and very helpful. Couldn't have asked for more.

My contractor subbed out the plumbing through Mathew Brothers. They did a great job overall - a couple of disagreements along the way but in the end everything came out great. Ed is a pleasure to work with and have worked with him again since this job.

We received several estimates and theirs was right in the middle. They showed up when they said they would to begin the project, and Ed was always very responsive. The guys that were out working at our house were very polite and pleasant and kept me informed about what they were doing. The whole project took about a week from start to finish (and this includes a delay waiting for National Grid to come out and hang the gas meter), and we've been very pleased with the result. The new system is quiet and has saved us a small fortune already this year. We tried to have this project done when we were almost out of oil, and actually did run out while we were waiting for National Grid to hang the meter. I called Ed and he had someone out here within an hour to relight the boiler and put some oil in the tank. Overall I was very pleased with Mathews Brothers.

Ed Mathews and his team did a great job when I decided to upgrade my heating equipment under the MassSave program. They were prompt, always at the house by 8 ready to work.I wanted to have the new equipment relocated from the center of the basement, to an unused utility corner. This posed no problem. And now I have tons of usable space on the main side of the basement.
Ed said the job would take about 3-4 days. And on day 4 they were done.Excellent service. I would use them again.

Mathews Brothers Plumbing and HVAC were excellent!!! Ed Mathews really came to our rescue. After a flood hit our area, the local contractors we knew, were so overwhelmed we barely got a phone call back. Although we were NOT affect by the flood, our boiler decided to died the same week! After calling several local companies we had several no shows, and one outrageous estimate. We were getting desperate, it was late October and the evenings were getting very cold. So we decided to look a bit outside our area to surrounding towns that were not effected by the flood, and found Mathews Brothers Plumbing and HVAC. Since I had no idea about Mathews Brothers reputation, I checked them out on Angie's List. They had a great record so we gave them a call. Ed was here right away.... showed up on time.... gave us a fair price and offered to start work the next day. Wow.... we were so thankful. They were able to get the new boiler down a very narrow space after a little ingenuity, and got us up and running in no time. Everything is working great and we are finally warm!!!

The person who came in was able to debug the problem within 2 hours - which I thought was very good. The problem was related to one of the water-overflow sensor breaking down, which was the cause of the problem. The person who came in was very professional, responsive, and the price was fairly reasonable.

They did a great job. We ran into trouble with our gas service based on a past repair the gas company did in the street that affected our service. Ed figured out the problem and got the gas company to give us a new service for free. I was really happy with Ed advocating on our behalf.

They were great. Their price was incredible; it was almost half of my very first estimate. I had to have them come back to adjust something and they were here the next day exactly when they said they would be here. The quality of their work was outstanding. Ed, the owner was here before everybody showed up in the morning and he hid all the copper piping’s so that it wouldn’t get lost or stolen. Copper piping costs a lot and I didn’t trust the neighborhood so took care of it for me. His guys then showed up with all the equipments. They started the job by 8 in the morning and were done by 6 in the evening.

The most important thing about this kind of boiler, is to have it installed by someone very familiar with the equipment. Don't go for a low price from someone who has not installed many of these. Ed was able to show me many completed projects like mine, both on his website and with additional references. He gave me a good price, and performed all the work very well and on time. I would definitely recommend him.

They came out quickly and completed the work in an efficient manner. They followed up to fix a pump that wasn't working correctly. The only issue is that at the end they had some stuff in the garage that they took awhile to get out but other than that, everything was fine.

Great. I selected Ed because he specializes in installing high-efficiency heating equipment and had solid references. Ed and his guys were clean, punctual, meticulous and took away the old equipment. They removed the old boiler, water heater, expansion tank and oil tank which freed up a lot of space in the basement. The new system (see picture) is wall mounted, looks great and takes up a fraction of the space. Another big benefit is indoor air quality. The new system's air intake comes from outdoors, so it does not reduce the oxygen level in the house. Also, I no longer smell the oily smell from the old system. In terms of cost, I ran detailed calculations and expect to save about $750/year in fuel costs.
