I enjoyed talking with Mr Lavoie abut my insulation issues and was impressed with his knowledge and thoroughness. He had some creative ideas about how to insulate my attic - although when we explored these further they did not seem feasible due to some recessed lighting that was not rated for insulation. His creativity also seemed to translate into more expensive for me. His estimate was $6000 for a job I ended up paying $4000 for. He did seem to do quality work and would be very good person for difficult insulation problems. What I found unaccceptable was that he represented himself as a approved national grid contractor - they have a $2000 rebate program for homeowners who use their approved conractors. When I checked the list on line his comapny name was not on it - I then called National grid who told me he was not a participating contractor. If I had hired this company I would have been out $2000. It ended up being an incredible waste of time for me to talk to this company.

The job was actually done over two different days and I can't recall the final total price, but our heating bill dropped by 1/3 right after the first job. We actually felt the difference in one room the very same day. Thermal found all the empty spaces that, logically, our contractor should have found. There was confusion over the appointment time, but that was overlooked in the subsequent courtesy and did not occur again. All said, the cost was well below what I expected to pay. I had had another estimate and it was through the roof. I only called Thermal to double check that rate.
Description of Work: Thermo Save insulated empty spaces in our 100+ year old home after our heating bills soared following the replacement of our roof (one layer replaced illegal three-layer roof). I called and they promptly called back and scheduled an appointment. Thermal filled in light fixtures, bulked up the attic crawl space. When one room was still freezing, Thermal apologized for failing to recognize the floor over the front porch needed insulation as well and came back to do that job. Thermal also filled the state rebate paperwork and submitted it on my behalf. I received a rebate within weeks.

Eric LaVoie came to give us an estimate for insulating the walls and attic of our house and used his infra-red camera to see where insulation was needed. It turned out that the walls and attic were already insulated (house is brick on the 1st floor, shingles on the 2nd floor). There is no evidence inside that insulation was added, so it must have been done when the house was built. Eric explained that adding insulation (R-30) around the perimeter of the attic would help keep the house warmer because as heat rises from the radiators on the exterior walls of the house, it will hit the insulated attic and flow across the ceiling and back into the room. Without insulation, the heat rises, hits the cold attic ceiling and goes upward to warm it. The extra insulation is definitely making the second floor warmer that it was. In addition to using his camera to check the walls, Eric also checked the doors for drafts and gave us suggestions on how to minimize them. Finally, he checked our furnace and set the boiler temperature (gravity hot water system) from 180 to 170 degrees. He explained that the lower temperature would avoid the overheating that takes place in the morning, keeping the house more comfortable and saving money on our gas bill. He was right about the comfort; I'll be keeping an eye on the gas bill. We appreciated Eric's knowledge of all the aspects of heating our house, and we thought his infra-red camera was really impressive!
Description of Work: Fiberglass insulation was placed around the perimeter of our attic to supplement R-7 rock wool insulation that had been placed under all the floor boards when the house was built in 1933.

Eric was on time for both coming to our house to look at the job initially as well as when coming to do the work. He called on his way to let us know he would be arriving soon. He and his crew worked neatly and efficiently. I had to be out of the house for an appointment and was not worried about having them at our home unattended. They cleaned up after themselves and the house was left cleaner than before they started. I was a bit late returning from my appointment and Eric waited for me to return (about 15 minutes later) in order to review the job and answer any questions. I would highly recommend him and his company to anyone. Since one of the areas didn't use as much insulation as he anticipated, he lowered the estimate by $200!!!
Description of Work: Our second floor has always been drafty and colder than our first floor. We called Thermo-Save and Eric looked at the whole house for areas we could insulate and be warmer. He noted that there was insufficient insulation in the attic, around the sewing room walls, under the attic stairs and over the dining room ceiling. He also noted that the hot water heater tank was set higher than necessary and that the oil burner valve was too high causing more oil to be used for heat than necessary. Eric and his crew blew in insulation in all areas needing it, decreased the temperature on the water heater and changed the oil burner valve. He thinks we'll save 30%-40% on our oil heat this winter. We'll see and let you know!!!

Great! Prompt service on both visits and clear explanations. House is noticeably warmer
Description of Work: energy "audit" of the house using a scanner device. Located gaps and missing insulation & made a plan to add insulation. Scheduled an appointment for the following week and completed the work adding insulation where needed and in the area around furnace. They also explained about rebates from the gas company and completed the paperwork for me.

Eric provided a very professional visit and analysis (using an infra-red camera), and also provided additional suggestions for energy savings. However, his proposed contract cost was high.
Description of Work: Work involved insulating the previously uninsulated walls of a 130-year old house with blown-in cellulose. Some walls were clapboard, where the insulation would be blown in from the outside; others were a slate Mansard roof, where the insulation would be blown in from the inside.
