Joe came for a site visit after having explained about the synthetic grass - we had previously met him at the Boston Home Show in early 2012. The area for the work also included an inspection hatch for the septic system and two irrigation sprinkler heads. Additionally we wanted a mowing edge added round the exterior of the fence, a paved area for the grill and a paved step into the rest of the garden.
The team arrived as expected - Crowley's had advised of a delay due to the weather; the communication level was good. The team worked well and kept the area as clean and tidy as possible. We had to keep the dogs off the area whilst the work was done so during the day they went to doggy day care. The work took approximately three days.
Albie came back with information I asked for on a suitable cleaner which is used by the owner of a dog day care which has the same synthetic grass; it is called Simple Green and it's non toxic and environmentally friendly.
Very happy with the entire process. The number of people on the job was impressive as was the amount of machinery used! The area looks wonderful and we are very happy. A collection of pictures of the work as it progressed was sent after the work was done which was a nice touch.
I had marked the property line, so they could plant the appropriate distance from property line. However, when I got home, the shubs well installed and bed (mound of dirt) was into the neighbors property. They had dug up the neighbor grass and left it dug up. Another tree was planted directly on the property line. I know that the standard rule is to dig 2.5 feet from the property line. Why didn't the lanscaper know this. I told them they had to move it because it is on the neighbor's property. They said that once those are planted, there is no moving them. Now I have to constantly trim so that they don't grow any more into the neighbors yard.
The estimate was another nightmare. The initial estimate was $5000. The day the shrubs were delivered the estimate went up to $10,000. Upon completion, the cost jumped another $5000 for a total of $15,000. With the explanation that he needed a lot more guys to do the job than expected.
I learned a lot from this bad experience:(1) always get a written estimate(2) always have contractor call if cost runs over the estimate due to unforseen problems. (3) always be home to supervise the work.
"Dear Angie’s List, I would like to respond to a review from a project that was completed on June 6, 2006 that was just recently posted and it’s now 2012, six years later. The day this customer states there was a problem and we could not come out to do the work, we were actually available and ready to go but she called and said she decided she wanted to go to the nursery. We are certainly always more than willing to accommodate our customers. Therefore, instead of my crew working that day, the customer and myself drove to the nursery in Sudbury, MA so she could hand pick and choose what she wanted to make sure everything was to her standards. In regards to the her marking the property line for the shrubs and trees to be placed on so she won’t have any concerns being on her neighbors property, her neighbor is a customer of ours also so we wanted to contact him just to make sure everything was fine and he said there was nothing to worry about that he was not concerned about anything. He did not mention anything about his grass being dug up and left that way. It could be possible that her large shrubs are on her neighbors property now due to the fact that after six years they are going to grow substantially and if are not properly taken care of by pruning, could result in this occurring. When this customer states that their shrubs had to be moved and my crew saying it can’t be done caught me off guard. If at any time a customer is not happy with the placement of their plants, shrubs, or trees, we are more than happy to move them if need be. My crew always relocates plants if instructed to do so by our customers and this is why I am confused with that statement. Thank you, Joe Crowley"
I received one other quote from 360 Sports Systems. The cost was twice as much. They seemed to have marginally better grass product. Joe from Crowley's seemed like a good guy I could trust. Ted from 360 seemed a little used car salesmanish.
I did need to ping Crowley's to get the turf installed. Joe said "mid June" when he came for the quote. When I had not heard from them in mid June, I called. The office got the installation scheduled for the next week, following up the same day I asked about it. As far as contractors go, that's pretty decent overall - one reminder call to get the job scheduled and they take care of it quickly.
Great work. I'd use Crowley's again.
By far the biggest job in this project was the driveway (roughly 20' by 27'). Joe had four trucks and a big crew (12-16 guys) out and got it done in two days. The team did an excellent job; they were very meticulous in every way from clean up to install. I found the team very accommodating when working with us as well. We had a few areas that required careful planning, e.g. how best to cut existing concrete right next to a brand new mahogany deck, where to place a small rock wall near our entrance, etc. In every way, the team took time to ensure it was done right. The best part was the property was left in perfect condition; we didn't have to do anything after they left. Bottom line, Crowley's does high quality work.
