The owner was on time for our appointment, he measured and made notes about the condition of the entry and explained everything they would repair and replace and 6 days later I received a very thorough estimate in the mail with spec sheets for all the doors I had chosen as well as a couple of extras. I made my selection and hand delivered a check for the deposit.
As soon as they had an shipment date for my door, they called to schedule a date for installation. The crew arrived about a half-hour early in the morning, got right to work and they finished in about 6 hours or so. Installation work looks great, no mess left behind and the new lock was re-keyed to match previous lockset.
I couldn't be more pleased with my experience or with my new door.
Waited about 6 wks for arrival and job to begin. Estimated it would take about 5 days to complete. Because of the damage to a fair amount of the wood and the ability to repair it while the windows were being installed, we chose to repair/replace what needed replacing (a fair amount). You could tell that the team (Antionio, Walter, Rich & Sean) were dedicated to quality installation and work. They stayed, despite having other jobs that were starting elsewhere and juggled their schedules so we would be happy with the end results.
I would recommend them to anyone looking to have new doors/windows installed. They offer a personalized service and were responsive to issues along the way. Steve (the owner) was very committed to customer service.
The technician came to our home and took a look at the doors. He knew exactly what was wrong with them and how to fix them. He required a special tool from the office and went back to retrieve it. When he returned, he removed some trim pieces from around the doors and leveled both doors so that the doors shut and locked again. He also installed a new trim piece on both doors so that you would not see a gap if the doors became misaligned again (which is very common with pocket doors we found). After he finished, he replaced the trim pieces he removed and caulked them. As I mentioned, the trim pieces were damaged pretty badly by the previous tradesman, but he tried to fix them as best he could and repaint them.
While he was working on the doors, I had mentioned that we had several other companies in to fix problems around the house (we had just purchased the house and needed to have a lot of work done). One of the problems we had was the windows and another was a jammed kitchen cabinet door. When he was done with the pocket doors, he took a look at the windows and told me why some of them would not close properly. He showed me that there was a clip that you had to align once the windows were tilted in for cleaning. He then went and fixed all of the windows. After that, he took a look at the kitchen cabinet and found the levers underneath the drawer that allow you to remove the drawer. It took him about 10 minutes to open the cabinet. Unexpectedly, that cleared another 2 items from my list of things to do.
Needless to say, Maynard Doors did a great job repairing the pocket doors. Instead of doing a quick fix and moving on, they took them time to make sure that the problem would not recur. In addition, they repaired other items in the house, which other contractors couldn't do. They really went above and beyond for us and I would not hesitate to call them again for any issue related to a door or window.
Steve installed Anderson Tilt 400 series, new construction windows vinyl clad, with azak trim on virtually our entire house, About 30 of them including 2 bay windows and 4 big windows. A big job. They had submitted many quotes and then showed up and wanted one signed. I signed one and they stuck with it, even though it was the priciest of the quotes.
The crew of three arrived on time. Two workers (Walter and Antonio) and the supervisor (Rich). I was a little unhappy with several small issues:
First, when they removed the moulding from around the window, (which Steve had indicated up front would not be necessary), they haphazardly leaned these pieces of wood, with nails sticking out, up against fine furniture. In serveral rooms I had to explicitly ask them to not do this. Similar situation in the living room, where they were resting material and tools directly on a fine hardwood floor. So, just be aware that these guys are not that refined. It's up to you to supervise them and make sure they don't scratch your furniture/floors.
Second, when they carried windows upstairs (a narrow staircase), I had to stop them several times from banging into the wall. No big deal, except, that is something the supervisor should be watching for, not me.
Third, since they decided to remove all the moulding, they had to remove some metal fasteners for the curtains and shades. On two windows, they managed to lose the hardware, which I had to replace myself. Not easy if you have old/unique curtains/shades.
Fourth, they damaged (severely cracked) the wood moulding on several windows. Fortunately, it was cheap, generic moulding that was easily replaced. However, I had to point this out to them. Again, something they should have noticed/fixed on their own.
OK, enough of the minor criticism. I have to compliment Antonio on the excellent job he did of reconstructing the wood frame around a dual-window. The wood was excessively rotted, and instead of patching a small piece (which he could have done), he concluded "I have to do the right thing and replace this whole frame". He then spent a half-day fixing this one window. I was very impressed with that. Also, no extra charge. They finished 24 windows in 2 days. Impressive. I did have to help them in the final hours, to get them out of the house before dinner, by sweeping-up and installing the screens.
Now that it is months later, I'm happy except for one problem, but I don't think it is Maynard Door and Window's fault. The WoodWright windows all have a resonance problem. By that I mean, when a car goes by outside, a sound occurs through the window that sounds like someone blowing into a coke bottle. I can't be sure, but it appears to be the internal springs in the window vibrating. The only other possibility is that they did not caulk the windows correctly. They did mention to me that they do not use caulking that expands, because they have had customers complain later that it is oozing out the sides. The flip side of that would be that the caulkiing that they do use is not completely filling up the open space, which I hope is not the case. I may have to open-up one window and more carefully inspect.
The installer arrived within the promised time window and was done within 45 minutes. He was very courteous and professional.
I conducted a careful inspection of the door before he left and noticed the weather stripping was pinched and not creating a tight seal. In order to correct the issue, he had to disassemble the entire door again, which he did willingly. Unfortunately he was a little rough with the power screwdriver which meant everything got nicked up a little more than it already had the first time around. The installer did not clean up after himself and some light vacuuming was necessary from the small chips and wood fragments that flew off the door as he was working.
Overall: Good experience, but I wish the installer had been a little more careful.
The workers were not particularly tidy in their work. They left behind mess in our flower beds, driveway, and home. We found a broken plug in an electrical outlet and sharp objects under the tires of our cars. However, given how long it had taken to even get the windows installed, we weren't inclined to ask the company to rectify the mess---we thought that'd just be another exercise in frustration.
This ranks up there among the most frustrating contractor experiences we've had as homeowners. We were very surprised given the overall excellent reviews the company had received.
