flooring contractor

I had used this contractor last year and I thought he did a good job then. Unfortunately, the second time around was a WHOLE LOT DIFFERENT. I had left multiple messages and texted numerous times trying to get the install started after wallboard was complete. A timely response was rare and I'd have to call/text numerous times before I got a response. I recognize that sometimes things get busy for a contractor but if you can't fulfill the obligation of a job then don't take it on. When we were finally able to schedule an install date, no one would show up and we'd be in limbo wondering when someone would come so we could make arrangements for someone to provide access to house. I had already paid the supplier directly for flooring and it was delivered to site and sat for a while waiting for him to show up, ie much longer than the wood needed to acclimate. I was still trying to be patient though and gave him the benefit of the doubt. But when they finally did show up, the job they did wasn't as good as the job last year. Flooring installed had a lot more knots than previous install even though there were about 50 - 75sq ft of flooring left over which had no defects that could have been used in place of the knotted material. It was pretty much lay it down and get on to the next job without the care taken in previous install. Details at door thresholds were questionable and kitchen cabinet installer also pointed out how crappy it looked at those places. Flooring should have been neatly fitted to door threshold rather than having left beveled edge of threshold where it meets flooring leaving an unsightly gap. Gaps also left at a sliding door rather than butted flush to the door frame face. This was supposedly due to hurricane clips being in the way of flooring but that's a quick fix by just scoring out the bottom about an eighth inch deep and knocking out with chisel to clear the half inch wide clips. If workers had been better supervised and/or more skilled and were meticulous about their work that might have been fitted properly. As it is, it now requires a separate custom ash threshold to cover the gaps or routing/cutting a uniform channel to fit with a piece of ash perpendicular to the flooring. You know something is wrong when you?re telling the installer who is supposed to be the skilled professional how it should have been done. Getting it sanded and finished never happened before I effectively fired him after he failed to show for at least the third time to sand and apply finish while he started other jobs. At this point I was pretty much sick of getting the runaround for weeks on end, especially since he considered starting another job more important than finishing mine. He then texted me (not even a phone call) and fairly arrogantly stated that I'd never find anyone else to finish floor for at least a month. Fortunately, I found someone (via Angie?s List and elsewhere corroborated) the next day and they sanded and applied initial coats the next day, Saturday, and applied final finish coats two days later. I'd stay far away from this contractor if you ever expect the job to be finished in a timely manner.
Description of Work: Was supposed to install ash flooring, sand and apply finish.
