L MASONRY

Ten years later the bottom step became loose and the bricks and mortar completely crumbled. I had to call another mason to come and fix it. Turned out that, instead of concrete under the step, it was packed dirt! Apparently they ran out of concrete and packed it with dirt instead. that's why it crumbled, according to the mason who's fixing my step now. Cost me $2,000 to fix something that should have been done right in the first place.

Charlie came right away to look at the job and give a quote. The price was competitive and his crew started work right away. Unfortunately, problems started right away when the delivery truck dropped off the wrong color bricks. Next, the demolition job took six days instead of two as promised. I think Charlie under estimated the amount of work needed to be done. Next the masons started building the front step, but not according to the specs we agreed to. Work had to be stopped and Charlie came out to explain to the workers what needed to be done. The workmanship was good once things got started, but they put down badly scratched bluestone for the walkway (which had to be replaced). They then forgot to put down the cobblestone curbing, then later put down the wrong color. Finally, despite repeated requests, they didn't move the debris on top of the front lawn until 10 days later. The grass died and I had to redo a chunk of my front lawn at my own expense. Very frustrating.
