I contacted Autotronix to have a backup camera installed in my Subaru Impreza hatchback. The car doesn't have a dashboard display screen, so I asked to have a display in a rearview mirror installed as well. The quoted price was $350; much lower than any of the other places I contacted. They said it would take three hours, but they were finished in two.
The camera works fine, but the mirror display was not usable in daylight, because the reflection of what was behind the car was so bright, it washed out the display. Another problem was that the guide lines in the display converged at the car bumper, and diverged into the distance, which is backward.
I went back and asked if they had a different mirror, After some discussion, I decided that a mirror wasn't going to work for me, and the tech suggested a dash-mounted display. He could put in a small 3x4" display at no extra cost, or a larger 4x5" one for an additional $50. I chose the larger one. That brought the total cost of the system to $400, which is still well under the other quotes I got for a mirror-display system. He said it would take an hour to remove the mirror and install the new display, but again, was done much sooner than that. It mounts to the windshield with a powerful, lever-actuated suction cup. It's over on the far left, just above the dash, where it doesn't block my view of the road.
The rearview system works well. I can tilt the display so that it doesn't wash out with glare from outside, and the new display has guidelines that converge in the distance, as they should. Contrast is adjustable, and I am getting used to coordinating my steering while backing up with the display.
Overall, I had a positive experience with Autotronix, and would use them again.
