"Hi [Member Name Removed]! Thank you for your business! We work hard to treat all of customers like family. We're thrilled that you had a great experience! Thank you! Jenn Chaves Vice President"
I called Bay State after their closing time on Wednesday. Amazingly, they both answered and also promised to come by, some time on Thursday. At 1pm Thursday, I called to make sure they were coming. The very helpful receptionist assured me that they were, and told me that they were working on a school emergency, and guaranteed that we were "on their ticket" for today.
I called again at 5:15 and was told the same, with some more details about where they were, and that they were evidently out of cell range. She offered to call me before she left duty at 6pm. She did, telling me that she had heard from the crew, who needed to stop at the office and would then arrive later.
At 7pm, I got a call from the driver, saying he would be at our house by about 8pm. He was!
Please note that, although there were many delays, everyone was pleasant - and Peter came to start the job at 8pm, after a long day of work! I don't blame them for the delays, as inconvenient as they were for me. Instead, I praise them for staying in touch and keeping their promise to come!
Peter arrived, pleasant and calm. The weather was very cold, so after a few minutes he realized that he had to warm up a frozen hose before he could proceed. After thawing the hose, he had some trouble finding the correct sewer outlet into our cesspool (there are two), but Peter showed the mind of a great diagnostician: when one thing didn't work, he learned from that and tried another.
Three hours later, he solved the ?where is the pipe outlet? problem by removing the toiled from the 2nd story bathroom and sending a snake all the way down into the cesspool (60 or more feet away). The snake pushed a large obstruction into the cesspool, revealing that the sewer pipe had crumbled where it enters the cesspool, making it hard to recognize.
Once he identified the correct pipe outlet, he was very thorough in testing that everything was in working order. He then replaced the upstairs toilet and cleaned up after himself.
Altogether, this was a second impressive experience with Bay State Sewage. In spite of the long delay (which I do not blame them for) everyone I dealt with was courteous, friendly, caring, calm and competent. How many businesses consistently demonstrate those qualities?
Manny arrived within two hours, only to find that he had trouble getting his big truck up our icy, hilly, 1-lane street. He asked if I had any sidewalk salt. Fortunately, I did. Together, we salted the road. After a few tries, he was able to back up the road and pump the tank. He was extremely helpful in explaining what he saw and what further actions we might need. As it happened, our tank was not full, so the problem had to be in one of our two sewer pipes.
I asked Manny the cost of cleaning the sewage pipes that led to the cesspool, since that was where he determined the problem was. He quoted me $329 and offered to call for an appointment right then. All told, Manny was here well over an hour. The complete charge was $219, the minimum fee (based on a 1000 gallon cesspool or septic tank). He offered a modest senior discount, which I gladly accepted. At my request, he also asked for an estimate for replacing one of the sewage pipes, which is of the old and quot;orangeburgand quot; pipe. It is the pipe that had the blockage and is clearly disintegrating.
Ryan came about 2 hours later (yet more speedy service) and jetted the pipes. He said he cleared a clog in the pipe leading from the kitchen, where we had the backup over the weekend. He also took the time to measure how long the sewage pipe must be - to both of our surprises, it is 50 feet long. Ryan also extended a senior discount, bringing the total to about $505.
The same afternoon, someone from Bay State called with an estimate for replacing the pipe: $3500-$3800. We will certainly get another quote before having this done (and we'll also wait for warmer weather).
All in all, I was amazed by:
1. The speed of getting two trucks to us;
2. The low cost of pumping and jetting;
3. The persistence and care shown by Manny and Ryan;
4. The extreme politeness and thoughtfulness shown by everyone I talked to from Bay State.
I am extremely satisfied and grateful. In the future, we will always call Bay State first.
