I would, and will, hire them again.
I used Laliberte because of good reviews on Angie's list. Communication was difficult, and I needed to make repeated calls to ascertain if/when the estimate and then the job would be done. The first visit, to give me an estimate, went well. We looked at the inside areas that needed work, and then looked at some sealing work that needed to be done on the outside of the house. We agreed that, due to the bad winter, the outside work would be done in the spring. I was told that the exterior work would cost about $400. Repointing and epoxy injection was recommended for the interior wall/s, and listed on the estimate.
A crew of four arrived on the date scheduled. Upon arrival, they told me that they would not be doing the epoxy injection noted in the estimate. I showed them the original contract and pointed out that the bill should reflect the deduction of the cost of the epoxy treatment.. I pointed out a couple of areas on the basement walls that needed attention, but they made it clear that they were only going to work on one wall. (one area that I pointed out still leaks. It wouldn't have been a significant patching job). The wall that the men concentrated on wasn't large enough to accommodate all four men, so only two worked on the wall. It would have made sense for the other two to address the other smaller areas. I'm not clear what they were doing.
It was snowy outside, and the men didn't want to track snow in the house, carrying their equipment in. They opened a basement window, and climbed in and out of it as needed. Although it made sense given the weather, I would have appreciated a simple heads up about it, since my neighbors keep an eye on such things.
That said, I appreciated not having snow and dirt tracked through my home.
There was significant spillage of the patch material on the driveway. I assumed that it would somehow be cleaned up when the crew came back to do the exterior work.. There was no response to a phone call to schedule the exterior work. I left a message asking about scheduling the exterior work, and cleaning up the spill, when I called.
Leo is very personable and has a clear and clean command of situations. Our family and his went through some extreme hardship during the time of construction but his crew was very responsive and kept to their tasks. I do not have words to compliment them enough. We would employ them in a heartbeat if we need the help again.
Clearly this team has the experience and knows what they are talking about when they quote.
They first came by on short notice in late January to install temporary columns in our basement, which were badly deteriorated.
Once our engineer had finalized the structural plans in early summer we scheduled them to return in August, at which time they performed all the necessary repairs and additions. Although there were some scheduling hiccups, the communication overall was pretty good, and the work was done in a shorter amount of time than we were told they would need.
They did a great job cleaning up their mess, far better than most contractors, I only needed to do a bit of extra cleaning when they were done. And there were only minor interruptions to our household schedule.
They took care of all the permitting and they scheduled our engineer and the building inspector (whom they had to badger to com over) to inspect the work.
All in all they were efficient, clean, and did great work.
Leo's crew was very professional and cleaned up every night. They asked for our preferences in taking down some of the old dividing walls in the basement and cemented a hole left by a temporary support wall.
Leo also worked well with our engineer who was very particular, which we grateful for.
foundation cracks we didn't realize were there. Our job wasn't a very large job, but we really appreciated the hard work and
level of detail that Leo and his workers paid to our job.
Everyone involved in the work was respectful, pleasant. The area was always kept clean. They locked up after working for the day. Were mindful of the fact we had pets in the house. Arrived on time. Quality of work is excellent. Supplies used is top of the line. I cannot say enough positive things about this company. I would highly recommend them. In fact I’m planning on using them again in a few years. You will be pleased / happy if you hire this company.
Throughout all of this, a crack was evident in the main support beam in our basement, a very obvious crack. Our home inspector said the beam just needed an additional lally column installed and then all would be fine. Once we moved in, we obtained a permit from the city to have the lally column installed. An inspector from the city inspected our beam and approved the work before and after the column was installed. A general contractor installed the lally column with a poured concrete footing as recommended.
Despite all of this--all of the proper permits and all the approvals from city engineers and the home inspector, the crack continued to grow, slowly for a few years and then, early last year, with alarming rapidity. The floor above the beam became visibly uneven, and we became quite alarmed. We hired a structural engineer (Rene Mugnier Associates) who confirmed our fears that we did indeed have a structural problem. He explained that our existing beam was small for the house as originally built (codes in the 1930's were much less stringent than they are today). With the additonal weight of the dormer, new bathroom, granite counter tops, etc., the house was seriously undersupported. We contracted Rene Mugnier Associates to draw up the structural plans for the repair, and they recommended LaLiberte Construction.
Using the structural plans from Mugnier Associates, LaLiberte Construction Associates performed the reinforcement by attaching sister structural beams to the existing beam and adding custom-cut larger steel brackets over the lally columns on which the beam rests. The work took about three days. Leo LaLiberte and his associates were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. They were responsive, personable, respectful, and professional. They arrived on time and left things tidy. Leo was especially enjoyable to talk with, giving us advice along the way about all sorts of house-related things and explaining all the work to be done clearly to both me and my husband, even when that meant repeating himself at length. He also handled all permits and inspections.
We now have a beam that looks to me like it could hold up a sky scraper. The floor settled back into place, and our minds are at ease. We would highly recommend them, especially for those jobs with any structural concern.
"All of our men are 1099 sub-contractors who have been with my company for over fiften years. The reason we pay our men on a 1099 base is that they get to keep more of their money which is better for them. they are all very capable and all can read the structural engineering plans."
