The good:
Joshua's brother arrived at my house an hour after I called, which was impressive. He quoted me a pretty high price in my opinion (for an hour of work), but times were desperate and I was willing to pay that amount. He was very talkative and promised me that hacking the roof with an axe is safe and that he was accountable for it should there be any damage.
The bad:
That night after the work was done, water started leaking into the house again. I called Joshua the next day and he argued that this was new snow (there wasn't any snow between the time he worked on my roof and the time I called). I explained to him that this is not acceptable and he has to either refund me so I can find someone else who will do it, or come back and finish the job.
He decided to come back, and indeed the water stopped coming into the house. I was happy with his sense of responsibility and expressed my interest in hiring him to fix the ceiling with the water damage.
The ugly:
Weeks later the snow started melting. Every day I noticed more and more shingles lodged in the ice, directly under there the ice dam was broken. I called a roofer I trust to come and look at it. His analysis was shocking.
My roofer reported that there is extensive mechanical damage on the roof, and that it was punctured in several places. These guys literally shoveled my roof out with the snow. The damage is estimated at $3000.
I contacted Joshua and explained to him the situation. His first response was "Give me his name!" (i.e the roofer). I gave the roofer's name, and that was the end of my communication with More than able. They will not return my calls, text messages, emails. Nothing.
So now I am left with no choice but to take Joshua to court, which is the last thing I imagined myself doing when I hired his axe holding brother to remove a lesser problem of water damage to the ceiling.
To make things worse, I never received an invoice, and despite my repeated requests at that I doubt I ever will. My homeowner's insurance will not reimburse me the cost without an invoice.
Recap:
I paid $800 for a guy to break my roof
*** Update 4/21/15 ***
The owner(Joshua) sent me an invoice about a week after posting this review, and is actively helping me get get a settlement from the homeowner insurance company for the damage. In our conversations he appeared to have a genuine interest in a resolution that will make me happy.
The good news is that he has acknowledged his responsibility in damaging my roof, but hopes that the resolution will come from the insurance company.
I'll update again when it's all over and fixed.
A recent snowstorm dumped 2 1/2 feet of snow on my roof. In some places the drifts were 3 feet deep. I was concerned about both the weight and ice damming and wanted the entire surface cleared. The house is a 4-bedroom hip-roof with an attached garage and extension on the back, so the roof area is larger than usual. I checked Angie's List and saw the good reviews for More than Able. I called and, even though it was a Saturday and he was out of the office, Joshua answered promptly. I explained the problem. We made arrangements. He even offered for them to come that evening to do the work if I would like, but, as it wasn't an emergency, we agreed they would come the next morning (Sunday). The next morning Rick and Sean arrived. They were very pleasant, courteous and professional. We discussed what I needed. They assessed the job and Rick quoted me a price which I feel was quite fair and reasonable for the amount of work required. They did a great job of clearing the snow. Their work was thorough and it was apparent that they were careful not to damage shingles, bushes, etc. Not only was I left with a well-cleared roof, I have the bonus of a very neatly shoveled path around the side of my home to the back, which they had dug out in order to access the extension!
I highly recommend Josh for any bathroom remodel. He helped guide us through the process every step of the way from the detailed estimate, to buying the materials & the design, and through completion. His prices are very reasonable. We are very pleased with the result.
"Hi [member name removed], In response to the report, I do apologize for the delays on the project. Seeing as it has been a year since the work, you may have forgotten that I had lost employees during the time of your project, and it had put me behind schedule. I do apologize for the delays, but I am glad you are happy with the overall project. Sincerely, Josh Newman of More Than Able"
"Hi (member name removed), I'd like to start by apologizing for the lack of attention put towards your project. I was very short staffed during that time and was behind on multiple projects, therefore I was left with workers who were not as responsible as I usually hire and have working on my jobsites. I had thought that I had taken care of any issues that may have been a problem in regards to quality of work, and if you need anything else remedied, I would be glad to come out and take care of it personally. The staffing issues in my company have now been resolved. I apologize that your project fell into that difficult time period. Sincerely, Josh Newman of More Than Able"
"I have made unsuccessful attempts to resolve this with the homeowner. This was the last email I had sent to them: Hello [member name removed], I am writing you in regards to the report you had written on Angie’s List. I was unaware that you had felt this way about the project. When we had last spoke, I had told you that if there were any issues or anything that needed to be resolved, I would gladly take care of it. The last I had checked my report with you, I had straight A’s from you. Now I come to find that the report is an F. Some of the things that were written I did not agree with, and other things that were said I agree with and take responsibility for. I would like to start with the counter-tops. I did not use it for a cutting station. And I did not want to offend you in any way when I was accused for doing so, but between me, you and God, I did not do the damage that occurred to the countertop. And it was quite offensive to repair and spend my time and money to fix something that I did not do, in order to bring comfort to the project. In regards to the upstairs floors, there were scratches on that dark hardwood that your dogs may have done. And if I had added any scratches to the upstairs floors, I apologize, but yet was unaware of this ever happening. In regards to the tile, I had just picked up the tiles that you had picked out at Lowe’s and installed them. It was never brought to my attention that there was a color difference. And clearly if it was an issue, it should have been discussed with me, as this is obviously something that I would attend to. In regards to the toilet, if you don’t recall- two toilets were brought to that project. The first one, that you picked out at Lowes and was brought to the bathroom, you said that they gave you the wrong one. Then, we returned that one and got the requested toilet. After it was installed, I received the report saying that this one was the wrong one also. I was quite confused. The toilet that was installed did have a factory defect, and if you remember, I did drive over an hour to fix the defected toilet because it is my responsibility to take care of any issues on the job site. The door left open was an embarrassment to my company and should not have happened. The delays in the project, I take responsibility for. I was unexpectedly short staffed and over booked. I apologize for not giving your project more attention. I did not want to respond publicly on Angie’s List because I take each job very personally. Before I leave any customer, I just request that if there is anything that I can do to make them satisfied, that I would do it. I would like to discuss the project and the report further with you before I post my response on Angie’s List. I would like the report to be fair and accurate. I had worked with you and John and realized that you are nice people and all I would like is a fair response. Sincerely, Josh Newman"
