On the scheduled day to start the work, another person arrived and said he would be doing the work. I was not happy but in talking to the installer he seemed capable and we moved forward. It became clear that this job was not his priority as he had other jobs to take care of. I spoke to Mike and he explained that he decided to become more involved in his military work and the person doing our job can take care of the work in the same fashion as he would. There were numerous delays with the new installer due to conflicts with other jobs. In addition, he told me that Mike never explained to him the scope of the work and would not continue the work for what Mike was paying him. I tried to reach Mike but he would not take my calls. In order to keep the work moving forward I agreed to pay the installer directly to finish the job. He came back to me 2 times for additional money to keep working. I did speak with Mike once during the entire job and he tried to explain the problems which I was not really interested in hearing about. In addition, it became clear that the amount of materials estimated for the job was short. I had to drive 80 miles on short notice to get additional tile for the job.
The delays went on for well over 3 months. It was an incredibly painful experience. The work was done but a few weeks later the grout in the shower floor started to chip out. The installer did come back and said the cement had come through the floor tile joints and that only a very thing layer of grout was present. He attempted to fix it was a skim coat of grout but we are still having the problems. I tried to reach the installer and Mike and neither will return my calls.
"This member changed the scope of the job on day one and I was forced to out source the job for I could not install what they wanted in the alloted amount of time. We also had to re negotiate the price for the labor since the scope of work had changed. What we had talked about during the interview is not what they had us install. I am unaware of any issues with the shower but will contact the home owner to see if I can assist them correct this issue."
Issues 1, 2 and 4 were addressed the first week in April - 2+ weeks after the original work was completed. Fixing 3 required Mike to work with the manufacturer to acquire a product to correct the issues with the originally applied grout and its variation in coloring. Mike had issues with getting the manufacturer to provide the product in a a timely manner and turned his business problem into his customer's (my) problem. I find this very unprofessional. As his customer Mike should be interested in solving my problem and not making his business problem mine. He did not responded to any of my inquiries for 3 weeks. I finayy got a response to my email in whcih he stated that he would "try" and get to my house "as soon as possible" and since then (nearly 2 weeks ago) I am have gotten no responses from him on when I might expect to see my floors completed. I am not feeling comfortable that Mike has any intention of fixing my floors. The floor looks very bad. I plan to put my house on the market next spring and this is going to be a problem for me.
"I am sorry that you were unsatisfied with your results. I worked very hard to correct these issues. The original estimate was for us not to install tile underneath the appliance. That changed during the installation. To correct the cabinet issue, I hired a cabinet install to raise the doors. It is not noticeable and was only noticed cause I asked for her approval before I did this corrective action. The grout did crack in the bathroom and I promptly addressed the defective grout with a representative from the grout manufacturer. Some times things in construction go wrong, its the contract that comes back to fix it to make it right that counts. Thats what I did and continue to do. Inregards to the making the one wheel chair accessible, that was never talked about and resulted in my company losing $500 in materials and labor. But I did correct this issue."
"I do apologize for not being able to attend to the backsplash in a timely manner. The backsplash was not part of this contract and was a seperate job that I didnt receive a down payment for nor schedule to complete. I was told by the member that they were not in any hurry for the installation and I was trying to find time to fit it into our schedule along with other contracted previously scheduled work. I do not double book myself and when the member made it clear to me that they were not in a rush to install the backsplash. I admit I put it on the back burner. Inregards to the hardwood, Prior to the installation, I was hired as a consultant to inspect the wood after the first installers were fired due to a poor installation. I made comments about the wood, the installation, and options on the best way to install the wood. I further made the comment that I until I install it I cant be truley certain on what I think of the material. I even went as far as having my supply come down and insepct the wood to make sure we could install it . There was over 1400 sqr feet of material of various sizes and widths. I inspected a large amount of it noting that it had some miss milling that I believed I could be fixed at the jobsite. I was correct and did remill some of the materials and used the others were I could. As the project continued we ran out of usable lumber and the member had the mill provide the rest of the materials required at no cost to him. Resulting in the member having over 400sqr feet of materials left over apon completion of the job. Also, I was told by the member that the mill credited him the complete purchase of the flooring materials. I hope that he did get his money back for the materials purchased. Lastly when the estimate was conducted, I asked some question inregards to the construction of the residence. No signs were noticed of any inconsistencies of heights that would give any notice that there was a subfloor issue. The complete job site was wall to wall carpeting. Once the project began we noticed that his entire house is was constructed with particle board and had to be removed to allow for the harwood to be installed correctly. I try very hard to never have price adjustments to my estimates. But there are times were unforseens come in to play. When that happens, I try to communicate clearly why there will be a price increase and allow the member to make the choice on who will do the extra labor at the jobsite. I had a great time working with the member and would work for him again in the future. I do apologize about the backsplash and in the future will always schecule jobs as quickly as I can even when I am told there is no hurry."
