I had a contract with Todd Boynton who I think is quite knowledgeable with roofing.  One problem was that Todd told me that he does not do any roofing work, but he did tell me that he supervised - problem was, he was an absent supervisor.
I had a contract with roofing specifics on all aspects of the roof - the underlayment, the application, the materials, etc., including when the job would be significantly completed.  The materials that I requested were not all used.  The roofers ran out of  an underlayment material and decided on their own to apply a substitute without telling me.  I found out as I happened to be home at one point and was asking about it.  If I hadn't asked, I wouldn't have known.
I had also specified how some of the underlayment was to be layed down, not using the basic method, but overlapping more.  Only a portion of my house was done how I wanted it.  Todd was adamant that it was done correct, but his worker had told me differently and I had photos that proved that it was done improperly.
Not only was my roof not significantly completed on the contracted scheduled date, but there was NO SIGN of the roofers and no materials had been delivered.  As a female, I had made numerous telephone calls to Todd trying to get a start date.  He'd say one thing, and do another.  A male friend of mine finally called Todd and demanded workers the next day.  The workers did show up.
The workers took off the 2 layers of roofing material very quickly.  They cleaned up nicely outside of the house, except for over 250 nails they left on the ground that I found myself with a rented magnet and by hand.  Unfortunately, my garage and attic were a mess with nails and roofing dust and pieces.  I spent 3 hours cleaning my garage.  Todd did send workers immediately to clean the attic, when I brought up the subject.  If they had put a tarp down before-hand, cleanup would have been a breeze.
When the roofers brought the shingles onto the roof, they slammed 2 heavy bundles down at a time, shaking the whole house.  My house took about 64 bundles, so this happened at least 25 times.  I wonder if there was any damage done to my house.   The workers were asked not to slam the bundles a couple of times by a friend; they stopped for a couple of minutes, but then they started slamming the bundles down again.  I later told Todd this afterwards (since he was never around), and it was then that I found out that Todd had a policy that his workers were only to bring 1 bundle of shingles onto the roof at a time.  His roofing supervisor did not supervise.  Nice guy, but not a firm supervisor.  Since I work full-time, I was not around and Todd's supervisor made it very clear that he didn't want me talking to his workers when they were working.

I don't believe that Todd pulled a building permit until I mentioned the permit to him about a month after I signed the contract.  The building permit was dated about 2-3 days after I brought the subject up.
The roofers ran out of the delivered materials from Lowe's half way through the job.  After that, they brought materials periodically.  The roofers used some materials that were not on my contract, because they wanted to continue working.
One plus about Todd is that he was responsive to my telephone calls letting him know that the underlayment was done incorrectly to a part of the roof that I was able to catch was done wrong.  Todd agreed with me.  Unfortunately, Todd did not relay this to his workers and this created more work for them.  Todd also was quick to have workers come over to the house and clean the attic.
I had a building inspector look over the job and Todd was upset about this.  To his credit, Todd did show up and had his worker replace flashing which the inspector recommended.  Todd didn't think it was necessary, but the building inspector said over time, I'd have water leaks.  I withheld my last payment til this work was done.
Throughout the roofing job which took weeks because of lack of materials, etc., I got a feeling that Todd was having financial problems.  I did pay him less than the contracted price.  My roof was not done to contract.  Winter was quickly approaching and it was going to snow soon.  As a female, I felt that Todd was trying to intimidate and push me to give him his final payment before I was satisfied.

Had a young team of workers, came home to find one swimming in the pool, Todd was not present for and while the work was being done... No restrooms for workers?  they left things kinda messy.  Just be careful....
