"Hi [Member Name Removed]!!! Berry Mechanical completely understands your frustration. A letter was sent out in December of 2018 explaining the company's decision to tighten our territory. Berry strides itself on quality installation as well as service. With our current manpower, we felt in order to keep the quality of the installation as well as service, we had to shrink our geographical area we service. Berry said that we would honor any 2019 contracts and felt that the year would be adequate time for customers to find another quality provider. The warranty parts remain into effect and other servicers should honor (based on their policy). Should you be without heat/air, Berry would try to service based on our current capacity. Berry Mechanical installed in 2013 and serviced through 2019. We thank you and appreciate your prior business."
"We truly appreciate your positive review regarding your installation experience with Berry Mechanical. Because we use a higher end brand and back-up our installations with long term service relationships, price can seem higher compared to other actors in the marketplace. Time and again we've been able to prove our worth to our existing customers and hope you will feel the same going forward. Kindest Regards, Berry Mechanical Install Team"
"Thank you so much for your positive review! There are many providers to choose from in the marketplace but we are so grateful you chose to work with us, and we did not disappoint! Best, Berry Mechanical Service Team"
"We are so very glad to hear from you regarding your Central A/C installation performed back in the spring. Now that some warm weather has come through we are vary satisfied to hear that everything is performing as expected! We are just a phone call or email away if you need anything for your system. Thanks again for using Berry Mechanical Services, Jamie Beckwith."
Probably the biggest difference in the proposals was that Berry Mechanical utilizes a "pre-sales" engineer. One provider sent out worker-bees to scope the job. Another was the boss-man himself. The analysis prior to the job gave us more confidence that it would go well.
One other difference was that one of the proposals included the use of furnace brand that was not thought of highly according to on-line reviews and discussions. Berry proposed and installed an American Standard system.
The job was estimated to take about 3 days but turned into 5, with a 2-day pause in the middle. So it was still 3 days, just not all together.
All in all, things went OK with the performance of the job. Since the house was all electric, it is essentially hostile to the introduction of any other heating system. That is, rather than place a high-efficiency furnace in the lower level, it had to go into the attic space. There is no reasonable means to run duct-work from one level to the other (split-entry). This also meant a a "low" efficiency furnace had to be utilized.
So that all means that there was A LOT more work going on inside the living area. Always a good rule of thumb - move anything you cherish and is gravity sensitive away. Also check out what was done at the end of the day. The biggest whine I can muster is that the attic ladder cap was not put in place at the end of the day. We wondered why it was so cold. Heh, heh. Whoops.
When questions came up during the job, the "pre-sales" engineer was our go-to guy and he was very responsive answering our questions and providing reassurance.
When the job was complete, it turned out that there was insufficient flow to the last room on the ducting run. They came back one day later and added a diverter (or something like that - I wasn't home for that job). It improved the situation greatly but I still have to use a space heater. I attribute that to the difference in the room's positioning in the house and the occupant's ability to control the heat to his room and not affect the rest of the house (benefit of electric heat). It's not that bad for me, but it's not my room.
"Thank you for your thorough review of your experience working with Berry Mechanical on the all electric to forced hot air gas heating project. All in all everything sounds correct in your assessment of the experience but I [Member Name Removed] add some additional info here. We ended up going beyond our expected install window for two important reasons: Cutting the grills through your ceilings was much more challenging because of the nasty ceiling embedded electrical radiant grids that proved more difficult to cut through. We knew they were there & they were unique as electric heating goes. We just needed more time to cut with care & precision, so we learned from that experience! The other delay (weather related) occurred because of the furnace roof vent we needed to cut in. We happened to get a rare fresh blanket of snow right before this part of the install & so we needed a clear patch of roof to work with before making this hole in your roof. Once the spot was cleared & relatively dry we were able to execute some days later. The temperature consistency of a single zone ducted system [Member Name Removed] never be as precise as a room-by-room electric heating solution as you noted. However the benefits in energy savings & the better quality of heat should soon be realized over time. I'm glad that you acknowledged our prompt response time & honest efforts to relieve the temperature problem in the end bedroom. The room is losing heat much faster than any other part of the house & so it feels colder before the heat kicks back on. Improved insulation may ultimately bring perfection to this troubled room. Thanks again for your review and the opportunity afforded us to solve your heating needs. Kind Regards, Berry Mechanical Services, Inc."
The work went flawlessly. On the day of install, the Berry team (more like a SWAT team) showed up at my house on time and in a caravan of trucks, and after they all introduced themselves, the went to to work. ALL of these guys were great. I can't rave enough about how polite and professional each and every person was (as I had to peek in a few times throughout the day during the work). From the lead installer, to the the gas fitting plumber, to the electrician to the entire team of workers. They are like a well orchestrated and high preforming team (lots of companies could learn from these guys). The install took the whole day (as expected) and at the end, Dave (again super polite and knowledgeable and a Veteran--more kuddos to Berry for hiring our Veterans!! ) gave me a thorough walk through of the entire system, answered all kinds of questions from me and was genuinely great to work with. As a plus, my boiler room looks FANTASTIC!! The new boiler and all pipes and parts are now wall mounted, labeled and orderly, and its really beautiful to look at. I realize that aesthetics when it comes to boilers is likely unimportant when it comes to how the unit actually works and does its job, but its just another data point regarding the clean installs that Berry does.
So, its been a few days with the new boiler, everything is running perfectly, I'm thoroughly happy, and my house is warm and cozy. And while the the real proof will be in the long run as to how the boiler works out, I have NO reservations about fully recommending Berry and I will certainly not think twice about using them again.
"Hello Member, The boiler project you highlighted looks great, pictures and all! Your sales and installation experience are what we strive for here at Berry Mechanical. We hope to have a continuing relationship as the servicing installer for many years to come. We also hope you enjoy your energy bill savings & the piece of mind that comes with a new system! Best, Berry Mechanical Services, Inc."
He said they might not have the parts to replace what was necessary and may need to order them and then asked if I had another way to heat the house. I said I had an electric radiator and could heat a room or two. He said he'd get back to me with the cost of repairs and when he left the unit would no longer work at all. He had managed to take an error I used to see once every few days and make it permanent.
I didn't hear back from the company for a few days and then simply got an invoice with no other information as to what the diagnosis was and a note that I could contact a design consultant to discuss replacement options. I wrote an email to ask what the meaning of that was and it went unanswered for a few days.
At that point I contacted another service company to get a second opinion and I wrote a second email to Berry. This time I got a response that the technician found a "cracked heat exchanger" and the unit needed to be replaced.
The second opinion was that the hose that the first technician made into a trap was unnecessary as the unit has an internal trap. The external trap was removed, the unit immediately started up and has run fine ever since. I forwarded this information to Berry and the owner, Allen gave me a call.
He said that the technician had measured amounts of CO that indicated a cracked heat exchanger and wanted to come out to take another look. He came out a couple days later and checked the unit and the measurement was fine. Allan was quite friendly and said it was simply an honest mistake and that his company is focused on safety above all else.
I wrote the company one final email with a description of what took place and said, maybe it was an honest mistake, but even so it had real consequences. I paid them $100 to take an intermittent issue that was aggravating and make it permanent leaving me with no heat for days. Then I had to pay another company to correct their error. They gave me zero evidence that the unit needed to be replaced and communication was not good. I also don't care for a technician who comes in and tells you your unit is a POS. Unless that is the actual problem, its just rude and unprofessional.
They did not reply to that email, offer to refund me or offer any explanation that makes any sense to me. They may be honest, but I wouldn't bet a $100 service call on it let alone a $5000 furnace.
"Dear Member, We are always grateful for any feedback we receive here in this forum, be it positive or negative. Certainly the negative shows us areas where we need to make improvements & offer corrective feedback & training to our employees! The technician you originally worked with has been reprimanded & retrained to be more respective of anyone's existing HVAC system no matter the condition or brand. Thankfully owner Allan Berry was able to revisit only days later to revise & correct the original diagnosis as well as inspect the repair to a condensate trap performed by others. He then retested the furnace called "Combustion Analysis" to make doubly sure that everything was now working safely & correctly. In the end we did identify an existing problem that needed correction & performed the necessary safety check thereafter to ensure the problem was dealt with correctly by others. We are truly sorry for the initial experience with the 1st technician & want you to know your experience with owner Allan Berry is certainly more the norm here at Berry Mechanical. I hope that, going forward, you continue to have a positive experience with the alternate HVAC company you turned to during this episode. Kindest Regards, Berry Mechanical Services, Inc."
