BURKKON DESIGN

As noted above, we had a signed contract with the sole owner of Burkkon Design to renovate our home. Shortly after the project began we questioned Burkkon as to why the amounts that we were being asked to pay to his sub-contractors appeared to be excessively higher than market. As a result of our inquiry, Burkkon abruptly broke our contract and walked off the job leaving us with a demo'd chimney, deck, and pool fence. We asked three contractors to give us bids on our unfinished project and all three of them told us that they weren't sure how to do so since Burkkon Design Build had not obtained structural plans for how to remove our 17 foot back wall with 5 steel columns which supports our finished attic or how to remove our load bearing kitchen wall. (Note, we asked Burkkon months prior if we needed to hire a structural engineer and the owner's response was "no".) We've had to wait weeks for a structural engineer to draw up these plans, and the structural engineer that came to our house was dumfounded as to how Burkkon Design Build could have started our renovation without first obtaining structural plans. The day we signed our contract we were required to pay Burkkon Design Build $9,400 representing 1/3rd of our estimated management fee and $14,600 representing the cost of our Pella window and doors because the owner of Burkkon stated that Pella only accepts checks from contractors. It took us in excess of 80 hours of research and letter writing and 54 days to finally get Burkkon Design Build to reimburse us $5,899 which represented the portion of the $9,400 management fee which was for services that were never rendered. In addition, we recently discovered that the amount that we paid to Burkkon Design Build for our Pella windows and doors was $4,276 higher than what we would have paid had we purchased them at Lowes without a contractor. This was after the owner of Burkkon Design Build repeatedly stated to us that he could get a special contractor discount that would be significantly better than what we could get on our own. Obviously, this claim was very false.
