I knew I had an exhaust system leak in my 2001 Taurus wagon because the engine ran loud, and when I put a rag over the tail pipe there was no change in noise or performance. (An intact exhaust system will stall out if you do this.)
I went into Midas and asked for an estimate. Paul took the car in right away and the mechanic, Robert, found the leak on the top side of the muffler and let me put my hand there to feel the warm air coming out. It was the factory muffler from Ford that had been on 12 years and 97,000 miles. He showed me that it came as one piece with the exhaust pipe and resonator, but thought he could find a replacement of the muffler alone and weld it in. In five minutes he came up to the front with a printed estimate for the cost of the new muffler ($134.99), pipe connector ($39.99), and labor ($78.56). I knew the price was in line with muffler work I've had on other cars, but I wanted to think it over. I went and did an errand, and decided to go ahead with the job. When I called back they were able to take the car right in. I ate lunch across the street and came back to watch Robert finish up the job. He didn't mind my observing his work at all and we chatted about the car. He was clearly a knowledgable mechanic.
I felt good about this experience. There was no pressure to get other work done that I didnt' need. I was treated fairly and not overcharged, in my opinion. I would use this shop again. I do a lot of my own work, but for dirty jobs like muffler repair and bigger jobs that require a lift, I go to a shop. Obviously it helps to know what's wrong when you bring the car in and to be knowledgable about car repair, which not everyone is. This work was done well. I cannot be sure that the same shop would be as good at some other type of repair, but my sense was that they knew what they were doing. If I were unsure about the problem I would take the car to another shop to see if they agreed on what needed to be done. But my experience here was a good one. Some jobs are better done at the dealer, but definitely not all of them, and you can get lemon work at a dealer as easily as anywhere else.
When I got home, I checked the online price of the Walker muffler for this car. With shippingand a 3-year warranty it came to about 15 percent less than Midas. But Midas gave me a lifetime warranty for the muffler, and they had it in stock so I didn't have to wait for shipping. All in all I felt I got good work at a fair price.

They were courteous and you get in pretty quickly but, in the end, cost is key!
Response from Midas East Falmouth
"All brake work, including the work included in this review, is accomplished with high quality parts. All brake pads are, at a minimum genuine Wagner ceramic pads. Mufflers are genuine Walker Quiet Flow or better. Additionally, all brake pads, mufflers and struts/shock are guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle. We believe that our prices are fair and reasonable, and are willing to price match as long as any competing written estimates contain the same high quality parts."
