Augustine Lett stole $11,000 from us. On July 30, 2022, we met at our house and executed a contract of over 100,000 for exterior work on our house. We also gave him a deposit of $35,000 which he cashed on August 9, 2022. In September 2022, Augustine dropped off deck boards to be used in the work. On September 24, 2022, we met again at our house and Augustine said he could not do the project for the agreed-upon price. He agreed to refund the difference between the $35,000 deposit and the actual cost of the Azek decking he purchased and delivered to us. He estimated the decking cost $24,000 but agreed to provide a receipt to show the actual amount of the refund. After that, he ghosted us. Emails, calls, and texts were ignored and unreturned. On November 15, 2022, we filed a Breach of Contract claim with the Barnstable District Court. The case is now pending.
Response from Augustine's Home Improvement
"Shame on you Mr. Keane! When you and Augustine met to sign the contract, you only paid 1/2 of the deposit. You told Augustine, who is a trusting person, that "you would pay the other 1/2 of the deposit once you received some money from the sale of a property". Augustine did not CASH your check, he deposited it in the business account in order to buy Azek, which is very expensive, for YOUR two decks. He even had the Azek delivered to you even though he still had not received the other 1/2 of the deposit that you had told him you would be giving to him so that he and his crew could start your decks. You then told Augustine that you wanted to have steel railings on the lower, ground-level deck now. In the unfulfilled contract, you stated that there would NOT be railings on the ground-level deck. You then penciled the railings in at the bottom of the job description. This costs more money and needs an amended contract, obviously. Was he supposed to throw in a deck worth of steel railings and labor for free? You also forgot to mention that in your original post on Nextdoor.com, you posted the full name and full address of ME, his secretary. I live on a posted, private, dead end with my Autistic son and it is the only house on the street. I have had 3 different trucks with 3 different men pull up to my front yard, sit there for 5-10 minutes, then pull into my driveway to turn around. I now lock my doors, which I have never had to do in the 33 years that I have lived here. My husband works and lives off Cape, so it is usually just my Son and I. Nextdoor.com took this totally out-of-line post that you posted down, and all of the nasty comments that we received after your lies, breach of contract, and ranting about Augustine taking your money. You NEVER paid him the other half of the deposit due because of the additional work and charge or whatever bogus reason you have for that. He did not CASH your check. He deposited it into the business account, then went and bought ALL of the Azek for your 2 decks, as stated. You cannot cash a check made out to a business and why would he carry around large sums of money to buy your Azek? You then penciled in on the contract that you wanted steel railings on the lower deck now. Did you think that you should not have to pay for this additional material and labor? You lied, slandered, endangered my son and me, and NEVER fulfilled your part of the contract. You also stated that I was Augustine g.f.!! I have been married to the same man for 35 years!! Thank God that Nextdoor.com realized what you are and removed your untrue, scathing and litigious post that put my Son and me in danger. Augustine took this to his lawyer immediately. He was told to have his secretary call the police and that he MUST sue this man for the defamation of his character, business, and everything else mentioned in this rebuttal. I have still not received the court papers that you posted you filed. You will receive ours shortly. It is people like you that make the world a more difficult and scary place even when someone goes out of their way to please someone that did not keep his word. We have to pay the lawyer to notify HomeAdvisor legal team in CO to remove all of your twisted lies and report you to the BBB. I printed out the first post on Nextdoor with my full name and address on it, so do not try and tell people that you did not attack the business and that I, lie, mislead other members of all of the sites, BBB, and even the business website and endanger my Son and I. Also, I noticed that you changed the original post right here on your "updated" post. I am in the office 7 days a week. You have my #, as we have spoken before. I answer all calls and emails within 24 hours and give any messages that I, the secretary, receive to Augustine. Why did I not hear from you? What type of person does this Happy Holidays to you and yours."

It is egregious that we had full faith that he was an upstanding contractor with the state and that he would follow through with the contract however he absolutely did not. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Response from Augustine's Home Improvement
"What is really "egregious" is that someone who lost this breach of contract case twice, once in the Barnstable District Court and once in the Boston District Court, and used Augustine to get plans, permits, and a free, 60K government grant for addition for two grown "children", puts a bad review on his H.A. account. You and your wife were jumping for joy, hugging and crying happily after Augustine, an engineer and our architect had even removed the tree where the addition was to start that Monday, permits in place through his hard work, and paid for lumber to be delivered Monday, employees scheduled, and you go in the town hall the Friday before and pull the permits that Augustine went to the meetings for, filled out and paid for with NO notice! Perhaps this unappreciative, backstabbing is why the first contractor quit. He saw a scam coming and moved on. This cost Augustine so much time, money, and work that you had enough left over to buy a Mercedes for yourselves with a govt. grant that he did the work for you, signed the building contract with you, and spent hours with you, your wife, and our architect, while the entire time you were making a daily list of lies that the courts saw right through. You going so far as putting a 1"x1" square on the full set of plans drawn for you without even using a ruler. It looked like a child drew uneven, definitely not useable on plans, and tried to tell a court of law that our architect put that on to the addition that was already on the full set of plans!! Augustine, being the really good, honest, and kind man that he is, still gave you EVERY penny back, the plans and permits even as you tried to lie to two different courts. You had enough money left over after moving on to the THIRD contractor and all that Augustine did ahead for this contractor that you and your wife got yourselves a new Mercedes!!! I hope that you do not believe in Karma, Christianity, or Heaven and ****. If you both do, you have got some serious problems. Shame on you both!!"

We had a roofed deck converted into additional living space. 1) I believe they lost all my paperwork (including the deed to my house) needed to obtain the permit, I never received the deed to my back back) took 6 months to do a 1-month job. 3) tried to overcharge me for the job even though we had a contract, threatened to take workers off job although he had 2/3 of money but was not even 1/2way through work. 4) Did not return phone calls or ever check his workers progress. Heading to court.
Response from Augustine's Home Improvement
"The homeowner in this review has not even used his real name, to begin with. His name is Dennis and his wife name is Dianne. These people had a roofing company start to build an addition with no proper surveys, and no permits and they started to build beyond the required setback so the town put a stop order on the job that THEY had started illegally. This started last year and took so long to even start the actual job, as the town was extremely unhappy about them trying to do this illegally. We were called in to try to fix the legal and building mess with the town. We had to have MY surveyor fix the setbacks from the street to make it legal. We had to get the town to agree upon a variance based on our new survey. My engineer and I had to attend several meetings and a hearing with the clients at the town meeting. This cost me months of leg work and fees that I never even charged the clients for. During this long process to get the town to even consider allowing them to restart this job based on my good standing with the town officials, got them the variance. As anyone knows, dealing with illegalities by residents is a long and hard process to fix. We made it happen for them. How can this possibly be even remotely considered bad customer service? We were on this job consistently and had to deal with being able to get into the home due to their two pit bulls. We had to call in advance EVERY time we needed access to the home. This included calling for every contractor that set foot on the property. This further lengthened the completion of this job. The job is finished with absolutely no complaints about our quality work, Please note that there are NO complaints about the quality, however, they give me a 2.5 rating. They received their certificate of occupancy six weeks ago and have kept putting me off, telling me the "check was in the mail" and not responding to my calls or the certified letter that they signed. My foreman was on this job from the beginning to the end. Dennis, Dianne, my foreman, and I talked almost daily and I was supervising because they were so difficult to deal with. Every subcontractor complained to me about having to even go to this job. I even paid one subcontractor out of my pocket so as not to lose him in the future. The clients were not even charged for this. I paid for all the subcontractor permits out of my pocket just to keep the job moving. All of this work was free for them and costly for me. The clients were erratic, hard to deal with, and very unpredictable. Trying to collect money from these people was an issue from day one. We even adjusted the deposit to accommodate their finances. In doing so, we had a bounced check and many meetings to receive the next installment and there was always a reason why they could not pay it. Every conversation, text message, document, COPY of his deed (not the original), and many pictures taken daily have been kept. Even one text stated, "wait until it's time to get paid". The contract states that payment is due upon completion. That never happened even though the work was impeccable. We fixed their attempts to do this without the town knowledge and fixed the incorrect issues from their first contractor who did not get permits or surveys. This all cost more unforeseen expenses and time to backtrack and do it right by the codes and quality. We could not keep paying my contractors and materials without the appropriate, timely payments due."

I contacted Augustine's and received a return call that evening. I had an old storm door that needed to be replaced along with the old trim. He arrived the next day, looked at the job, suggested a plan of action and gave me a very fair price. Within three days I had a beautiful, new, Andersen storm door with the screen built in. No more changing from glass to screen with the change of season. He also replaced all of the old trim with new Azek that I won't have to worry about future maintenance. Augustine was punctual, professional, very pleasant to deal with and fairly priced. I am hiring him again for a much bigger project next.

Augustine's crew replaced a deteriorating front bay window for my living room. The window was large, 50x96" We ended up installing a smaller, more suitable window for the room, and the crew built a gorgeous frame for that window and finished the walls. If I were to think of three words to represent this company, those words would be: honest, skillful, courteous. Best value on the Cape!

My wife and I couldn't be happier with Augustine. When I emailed him he called me immediately the next morning to discuss the line of work I was interested in. He showed up the day after Christmas to look at my requested projects leaving me confident this was the guy who was going to get the job done. I've reached out to three prior local contractors on the internet prior to coming across Augustine just to be left in the dark with no return phone calls or emails, and one was a no show after I had to arrange my schedule thinking he was going to come to my house. Not Augustine, he was on time, extremely friendly and personable and most of all reliable. After my French door arrived he made a special accommodation for me by removing Tommy and Nick from a more extensive job and got them in my house within three days. Tommy and Nick were equally as professional, courteous, and impressive with their attention to detail and quality of work. Augustine showed up mid project and he too seemed very pleased and proud of his crews accomplishments. The French door required wall demolition, framing, and some flooring repairs which were all completed in just over one full work day. The storm door was done the very same day too! Living in this town and not having our "go to" guy was tough but we are fortunate to have found Augustine and we will continue to have him and his crew (hopefully Tommy) continue to do our home improvements. Give him a call!

A nightmare experience. Words cannot describe it, never finished the job just left it partly finished. Nice guy maybe-- but took a job that was way beyond his scope. First the excavator ripped out my water, electric and phone lines --all underground utilities. Took months longer than agreed upon and on and on. Stairs are not aligned, deck boards are popping free, stone cladding is broken but they still installed it. Had a total of 4 different people in succession working on this job, for various reasons. I wish I could forget about it...thats all.
Response from Augustine's Home Improvement
"We contacted Dig Safe and they came before we started doing any work on this project. We would never do any work that required digging, especially with heavy equipment, without verifying the work with dig safe. It did take longer because we repaired anything that was damaged due to the incorrect information we received from Dig Safe at no charge, of course. We wish that Nadir had contacted Dig Safe like we did......we were also very upset. In so far as any problems Nadir said that he had with the work, we give a one year warranty and wish that he had called us so that we could look at what he's stating and have had the opportunity to at least see it and fix it if necessary. We had several professionals on the job site because they all specialized in the different parts of the work that was requested. Nadir did not call us to look at the issues he's stating or make the final payment. After reading his review, not hearing from him and the issue with dig safe, we did not pursue the final payment. We wish that he had called us to give us the chance to at least look at the issues he's saying he had. We back our work 100% as can be seen by our other reviews."

The employees fought with each other on the job and one walked off, I requested Augustine to come to the job and complete it and to call me when he arrived. That did not happen. I received a call from the secretary to tell me the job would take another day because there was more work, but the job was appraised.
Response from Augustine's Home Improvement
"The customer neglected to tell me that there were bee hives around the work that needed to be done. The employees found this out when they got into the work. The employee that walked away from the job was allergic to bee stings. The other employee was understandably upset, as this was a two person job. The job would have taken another day after the bees were addressed by the homeowner. I do not know what "but the job was appraised" means."

Augustine was a pleasure to work with, a gentleman. He showed up when he said he would. The work (installation of a shower tub unit) was actually done by a subcontractor, who did a fine job and seemed to be familiar with the work. He also did some needed drywall work after, and the added charge for that was quite reasonable.

This is an old Cape house built at different times. All the trim was replaced with Azec -- a big job. Inevitably, some areas of damage were found when old stuff removed. Augustine's crew was hard-working, thorough, pleasant to deal with. The work was completed as promised, including the extras needed, each of which we discussed. His estimate was below competition, and even with the extras still below what others bid.
