I have been doing remodeling and renovating to my home.
I hired a strong person - and we removed the tub from my first floor apartment. - These are Extremely heavy - cast iron - probably weighing 300+ pounds - and as they say - a 'b****' to move!!
I sent this first tub out - and had the exterior sandblasted - to remove all the 100 year old paint.
(the interior had to be masked to protect the enameled porcelain)
Separately - I sent the claw-foot legs - and hardware to have it all re-chromed. (came out beautifully!)
This tub was delivered back to my home - and we brought it down into my basement . At this point - in coordinating with K * D Reglazing - Paul sent out his only employee 'Rick' to do the job. Rick too was friendly and personable.
Reglazing is basically just a spray on material - Nothing like the original process of being baked on over day in about a 1,500 kiln.
Rick missed filling in the half a dozen pits in the finish before spraying this coating.
The next day I went in the basement to check out how it was looking - the the lower 6 inches of the inside of the tub - had all crinkled up.
Paul was harder to reach now - but did get back to me. He didn't believe that it had crinkled. Finally - Paul came back out - and said he had never seen this before. - So they redid it again.
More drips and runs - and Again - more runs in their 'paint' -- and again missed filling in all the pits.
So - they came out and redid it again. - We (myself and a helper) reinstalled this tub.
I was told the glazing does NOT like hot water - and I refuse to take a Cold bath (I think anyone would).
Now about the 2nd tub - on the 2nd floor. - We took that one out too.
Down a flight of stairs - A LOT OF WORK!!
It was $319 per tub to get them reglazed.
Paul himself did the 2nd one - TWICE!! - so that's FIVE times TWO tubs were reglazed.
ALL FIVE times neither Paul or Rick filled in the dings. I told Paul I did NOT want him to add the scent of baby powder -
but that didn't faze him - my house stunk of that odor for over a day (both times).
After the 2nd tub was reinstalled - it pealed BADLY!! - - About 3/4 of the tub pealed - looks like crap!!
Last year - I called Paul - now near impossible to get on the phone - he was friendly - but not happy.
I was surprised - I asked for half on my money back (one tub). He asked to reglaze a 6th time - and I said 'NO!!'
Paul sent me a check.
It is now June of 2013 - and the 2nd tub it pealing!! : (
Do I need to tell you - I would not hire K&D again - or any other reglazer.
I think the only way to really restore an old cast iron tub - is back in a kiln - and re-porcelain - and
I can't find ANYONE to do that.
What a waste of some back breaking work (that I did) - my time and money!!
