My broker gave his card to me when I bought the unit although she had no experience with his work! I did get three estimates and he was par with another.
Mr. Tom MacDonald and I discussed the plan and he supplied me with an estimate of $15,000 to complete the basement from ceiling to floor.
Mr. MacDonald started the process and never finished. Naively he talked me out of getting an inspector involved. He did about 75% of the work and poorly! I had to hire another contractor (who had done excellent work on my brother's home..I know should have hired him) to finish and it cost me another 5,500 dollars to undo and then correct his work.
The new contractor commented on how the walls were not plumb, the ceiling was bowed and falling and that the "finished carpentry" was not finished. When the ceiling was down, he commented that the lights were placed incorrectly and were a safety hazard.
Mr. MacDonald hired an electrician who worked a second job and came at night). Mr. MacDonald also had another one of his workers (unskilled) enter my home and go through my house looking for my vacuum to remove all the dust from sanding the walls. It ruined my $350 dollar vacuum from Sears. Mr. MacDonald never came back to clean the remaining dust and debris as promised and left his garbage and broken tools in my basement.
He promised to enclose exposed water pipes that fed the outside faucet and protruded out of the wall, as they would be a danger to kids playing? but never did.
He used inferior products and never supplied me with receipts. He enclosed my furnace, and at a scheduled meter change, was told by the N... Gas Co. representative that it was a danger as there was not enough ventilation. Commented that at the very least he should have installed a ventilated door. Home inspector who came to check new hot water heater said the same!
Tom MacDonald attempted to enclose my ceiling fire alarm with the drop ceiling and when I objected, did not finish that portion of the ceiling. I called and he promised he would come back. However, never did.
Buyers beware! Please learn from me do not make the same mistake. He talks the talk but does not deliver. I was naive but it will never happen again. I tried to let it go but the inspector was the last straw!
