"Hi [Member Name Removed], Thank you for making us aware of the missed spots and allowing us to come back out to complete the job to your satisfaction. We really appreciate your review! Please keep us in mind for any future projects. Donald Burnett – Branch Manager Jones Boys Insulation (978) 777-0629"
The person that I dealt with primarily over the phone regarding scheduling and other things was Bob Meehan. Bob is great and very responsive; I can't say much about other people on the front end at Jones Boys, but if you have an issue, ask for Bob (sorry Bob!). He's very nice, knowledgeable, and seems to want to get things done right and make you happy.
As for the crew, the reason I gave them a B for punctuality is because they were supposed to start on Wednesday morning. They actually didn't come until after noon and only stayed a few hours that day, but they more than made up for that later. Our project was a 4 day project, and they were very punctual the rest of the days. Everything else deserves a solid A. We were very lucky to have Juan and his crew; they worked hard and were very respectful and very clean!! They even came to finish the work on a Saturday, which really impressed us, as it took them the entire day. Throughout the project, they would show us pictures of their progress, which we really appreciated as it is difficult to access our attic space to see for ourselves. My husband and I were very happy with their performace, and we would recommend them to anyone in a heart beat. Thanks Jones Boys!! We are looking forward to saving a good amount on our utility bills.
.I was told that the crew would start shortly after lunch on a Thursday, but they weren't onsite until 2:30 or so, and promptly got their truck stuck in the dirt on either side of my driveway. They did not ring the door bell or announce their presence in any way. I still don't understand why they didn't back the truck into my long narrow drive, or back out and try again when they realized that the parking area wouldn't provide enough area to turn their large truck around. Instead they drove more than 6 feet onto my lawn over some pine saplings and a forsythia, and 3 feet off the other side. Given the strange warm winter, it's no surprise that the truck got stuck. They had to hire a tow truck, and wasted the afternoon. I was told that they'd bring rakes and other tools to try to repair my lawn.
When the crew returned the next day, they did not bring any landscaping tools, and only made a crude effort to stamp down the mess after some prompting. I'm used to services that reseed odd tire treadmarks on the edge of my narrow drive before I realize that there's any cause for concern.
They weren't much better with regards to the way they handled the insulation. Their before and after blow door tests showed no significant change in results meaning that thier insulation procedure opened as many cracks as it filled. Vinyl siding reinstallation was sloppy, and some pieces of window trim were knocked out of square. My house has a small amount of vertical wood siding near an entry way. The crew left 2-inch holes with wood plugs, and didn't even carry wood filler to make an effort to provide a sealed and paint-able surface. After some complaints, they agreed to knock in the plugs and fill the surface. When they returned to reset the plugs, they hammered about 4 of 20 before slapping on a very thin coat of filler and running away from the job site.
After receiving the official estimate and work agreement within a few days of the initial visit, we sent back the signed paperwork and the required 50% deposit. Since they were very clear that we would need to vacate our home during the foam installation and stay out for at least 24 hours after, we were pretty interested in scheduling the job since it meant we also had to find someplace else to stay for the night.
After waiting for more than six weeks with absolutely no word from the Jones Boys to actually schedule our job we finally began calling the office. On the first call they told my wife that "yea, the paperwork had been sitting on my desk for the last couple weeks" but that he couldn't find it right then and would call us back as soon as he found it. Two days later with no callback, we tried again. Again we were told that they needed to find the paperwork but would call us back later in the day. Guess what...no call back. So the following day we called yet again and refused to hang up until we got a date scheduled, which we did for a little over a week later.
The day before the install we called the office again to confirm that they were actually going to show and were told to expect the crew at around 9:00 am. The following day they didn't actually show until about 10:30, but they got to work right away and were very professional. When they completed the job later that afternoon, they told us that as long as we stayed out of the house for a couple more hours we probably could actually return that same night as the "fumes weren't that bad." I returned later that night and they were correct, while you could smell the foam curing, it wasn't too bad and they had done a great job cleaning everything up.
Unfortunately, they had forgotten to install the vapor barrier that was on the work agreement, so the following Monday I called the office yet again to let them know. They told me that I was correct, they should have installed the vapor barrier and he would have someone stop by later that afternoon to finish the job. When no one ever showed, I called again two days later and the office staff apologized for forgetting to schedule the job and said someone would be out the next morning. When the next day came and went with no visit, I called the office yet again. The scheduler apologized (again) for forgetting to actually send someone to finish the job and said he would have someone out within two hours. Needless to say, no one came the rest of the day, but to my surprise, a team actually did arrive the following morning and finished the job within an hour.
In addition to all the scheduling problems, we also had problems with the billing department. On the day of my third call trying to schedule someone to come finish the actual work, I received three bills in the mail from Jones Boys. All three showed different amounts due and all three were actually wrong. We had paid 50% up front ostensibly before they could schedule the job to begin with, but none of that deposit was actually reflected in the bills we received, so I made yet another call to the office and asked to speak to the billing person. They were not in the office when I called, so I left a detailed voicemail explaining my issue and questions and asked her to call me back. Living up to my expectations, she never called back, so I tried again four days later and actually did reach her in person. She apologized for not calling me back (I'm sensing a trend) but said she hadn't actually figured out what had happened yet. While on the phone with her, she said she suspected that the billing department in their home office had just misapplied our deposit to the wrong account, but she needed to call the home office to confirm and would...(you guessed it) "call me back". It is now three days later and still no call...[Update: She called back at the end of day 3]
Overall I would say that the install team did a good job (other than not initially completing all the work that was on the work order). Our family room is noticeably warmer now, even as temperatures have dropped, but with all the hassles of dealing with an office that seems to be in complete chaos, I'm not sure I would ever use Jones Boys again.
