Awful. Seriously hire anyone else. I paid them 3 weeks ago and they have only completed half of the work. I hired Carpenter Costin who gave me a quote to remove 3 trees, grind all stumps, and remove all wood. The work was supposed to be completed at the end of November. They came out and cut down two trees on November 30th. When they finished for the day they asked me for the check (which I foolishly gave them) and they cashed that on December 4th. They left half the wood. After several calls they at least came back and took that away a week later. Today is December 19th and 1 of the trees is still standing and the stump work has not been completed. After calling them 3-4 times a week and being fed excuses like “you’re on the list”, “we’re shooting to be there tomorrow”, “our stump guy hasn’t shown up and we don’t know where he is” They finally informed me they would not be able to complete the work and offered me a $300 refund. A $300 refund, for the 3 stumps and 1 tree they didn’t cut down and for lying to me for three weeks. Thanks. You can see the attached pictures for the quote they gave me and my backyard. The tree you see was part of the quote to be removed. Those are the other stumps they left.

Paid for a 3 man crew for one day. The neighbors noted that the crew slacked off during the afternoon. One tree on the plan was not removed. One log was left on the property. The yard was left in a mess. A complaint phone call promised a call back which never happened. After three weeks the log is still there. I believe I overpaid for the work performed and unfortunately trusted the company and paid in advance. Find another tree service.
Response from Hartney Greymont
"Dear Mr. [Member Name Removed] We are very sorry that you were unhappy with our service. It is our policy to make sure jobs are completed promptly and customers are completely happy with our work. I spoke with you on the September 9th and told you I would send the crew back immediately to take care of any issues. At that time you decided you did not want us return. I am sorry you did not allow us to correct the issues for you. Again I apologize that we did not meet your expectations. Bonnie"

Punctual and professional. Gave good advice along the way about my trees, on top of what I wanted them to do.

I called Carpenter-Costin on Monday, and on Tuesday Paul came to look at the tree and gave me a quote. By Thursday the work was done, and the quote was spot on. The workers were friendly, did a thorough job, and even disposed of a barrel full of lawn clippings for me (which they did not have to do). Happy with the work.

They were quick to respond with the initial estimate and were able to schedule the work within 2 weeks. The crew arived early in the AM. I was impressed with how quickly and efficienctly they worked. The crew was very friendly and personable, and I felt that they took great care to protect my home. When they had finished, I was told that they would return to remove the larger tree trunk segments that could not be ground down in the next few days. It took them 3 weeks to pick them up.

They did a very good job with the trees. They were prompt. They did the job they said they would do. The price was correct.

We had an overwhelmingly negative experience with Carpenter Costin. It took them weeks to complete just a portion of the job for which they were hired, and they behaved with a total lack of professionalism throughout the miserable process. They damaged our property, lied to us, and were rude to us. They did not answer the phone when we called and did not call us back.

I did not want to leave a negative review -- I would like to forget about the entire experience -- but I want to save others the trouble and expense we endured.

We hired them on May 10 to cut down one large and one small tree, and trim all our neighbors' trees back to the property line. They rescheduled us over for various reasons -- mostly because the trees were and quot;too wet.and quot; However, when they finally showed up it was raining, so I guess the wet trees weren't such a huge problem after all. When they finally showed up to take down the trees, they sent a guy with a rope instead of a bucket truck. We weren't expecting them that day, so we were not at home when they arrived -- had we been home, we would have told them to come back with a bucket truck. The tree was too large and close our house and our neighbors' to safely remove without one. The guy climbed up the tree, hacked off branches, dropped the branches onto our roof, and let them slide down the roof onto our azaleas, tearing off our gutter guards and damaging our azeales and brick border in the process. They piled the lumber all over what was left of our bushes and front yard. Instead of trimming the border trees back properly, they broke off the branches they could reach with a pole -- so for about 15 feet you could see splintered branches sticking out, and then a giant canopy hanging overhead the rest of the way up. Then began the rescheduling and delaying of lumber removal. When they finally took the lumber away they damaged our fence. Then began the rescheduling and delaying of stump grinding and finishing the border pruning. They would tell us that they were coming and then not show up. When I called or emailed, I would be told that and quot;the supervisorand quot; had decided to push our job back. I asked many different people -- the receptionist, the salesman, the foreman -- if Carpenter Costin was unable to finish the job, and was assured each time that no, everything was fine, I was on the schedule and they would get to me right away.

By June 6 (after 4 no-shows/no-calls on the stump grinding and pruning) I emailed that they could either finish the job on June 7 or send us a revised invoice for the completed work and I would hire another company to finish the job. I received no response. I called the office and the receptionist Mari was very rude and kept insisting that nobody at Carpenter Costin was in any way responsible for the delays, rescheduling, or lack of communication. She refused to put me through to a supervisor or take a message, and hung up on me in anger.

On June 7 I was able to reach a salesman by phone and received verbal agreement from him to pay for the completed work and end my relationship with Carpenter Costin. That day I hired another company (Demore Tree -- see my other review). On June 8 the job was completed with a high level of professionalism by Demore.

In one area Carpenter Costin was VERY prompt -- we received a bill for the job just days after the tree removal, before the rest of the job had even entered the rescheduling phase.

This was a disaster. We had recently purchased this home and the plantings were quite overgrown. We received many mailings from landscape companies and I was impressed by the materials and information in the mailing from Carpenter and Costin. The arborist who came out to estimate the work seemed knowledgeable and not pushy. I told him my main concern was the large beautiful hemlocks which formed our only privacy barrier from our neighbors. We agreed they needed to be sprayed for wooly adelgid and that the middle branches had grown too long and were overhanging the lower branches, thus blocking needed light and air. I was home ill the day the crew came to do the work but no one came to the door. The crew spoke broken English and I never saw anyone directing them. I don't think they knew what they were doing. I went to the window several times and actually went out to talk to the crew one time but honestly was too sick to think straight and just tell them to stop. They savaged the hemlocks leaving us with ugly sticks and bare branches for the lower third of many trees. They insisted they would grow back but I have had several other arborists look at them and they will not grow back. Now we have had to put up a fence for privacy and will need to plant understory shrubs to fill in the bare areas. The pruning of the shrubs consisted of trimming them into lollipop shapes. The cabling of the birch tree was done with the incorrect type of wire (picture framing wire - way too thin) and was done way too low in the trunks where it would not serve its purpose. We had to have this re-done by another company. I called several times and did not get any response to my requests for a call back. I wrote a letter expressing my unhappiness and got no response. I did however get phone messages and mailings asking me if I wanted additional work done! I have heard from others that this company used to do good work but expanded too rapidly a few years ago and as a result the quality of their employees has declined.

The whole thing was done so professional and accurately. They were done in a reasonable amount of time and the finished product looks fantastic. I was very pleased with them and the price was good as well. I would recommend them to other people.
