The serviceman arrived on time and as scheduled, first stop after 0700. He came in with his small tool bag and checked the air handler. Even though it appeared to be clean and I ran my fingers over the unit with no residue, he suggested blowing it with compressed air and a spray on cleaner. He walked back to his truck and returned with a portable compressed air unit and did his work. Everything was in order and he buttoned the unit up. Then he walked back to his truck and returned with his gauges to check the outside unit. When it checkout out, he returned to his truck and returned with a bill for $253.00. When I had scheduled the service, I was told a routine service call was $139. The service tech stepped outside, made a phone call and returned to inform me that that was for the first hour only. He said he had been there about 2 hours. He actually arrived about 0710-0715. He completed work and was back in my home by 0850. He also made three trips back and forth to his truck, when he could easily have carried his small tool kit, gauges and clip board in one trip. In retrospect, he was clearly padding his time and his bill, which I never suspected at the time as I had a quote of $139 for a routine service call where no parts or extra labor were involved.
I recently retired from a small business and I understand that businesses must make money to stay in business; however, businesses do not have to be deceptive about their pricing. If the pricing is $139 for the first hour then say so up front and make it clear what extra time will cost.
I have no problem with what the technician did, even though cleaning a clean air handler seemed unnecessary, but his multiple trips back and forth to his truck when he could easily have brought all his equipment in at one time was clearly planned to increase his time and his bill. He said that he didn't have any other scheduled calls and that he was the "on call" guy for the next few days. That tells me something right there. My best guys are always scheduled and the others get standby. Perhaps a different tech from this company would have done things differently but I'm reporting what took place.
BTW, I did not use Angie's list to find this company. It was a second hand recommendation and I've learned my lesson. These guys will never set foot in my home again.
