Janine K.
Jan 2013
Home Building, General Remodeling
David?s vast experience and impeccable reputation over the last 30 years, has placed him atop the trade list and made him an extremely resourceful construction problem-solver. No website, advertising, fancy new pick-up truck or tony address for David: it?s all about the word-of-mouth communication and the next satisfied customer.
My wife, Janine, and I have owned for years, on Cape Cod, a much-traveled cranberry barn that was barely livable. In 2011 we hired David to manage the construction of a 1000 square foot master bedroom suite. The full-basement ?addition? included the sourcing of 18th century hand hewn oak beams for the cathedral ceiling 16? wide plank pine flooring from Maine.
In 2012 we asked David to continue onto a second ?addition.? The 1150 square foot project included an attached two-story, two-car garage with living quarters above and a bump-out boathouse. David was more than challenged on this project design, since the architect?s plans called for complicated measures and timber cuts to satisfy the town?s land set-back regulations while accommodating a visually appealing structural design. Also, this new addition required steel beams for an open garage, and needed to attach seamlessly to the 19th century original cranberry barn structure. He came through for us in every aspect of this difficult mission.
In 2013 we again asked David to continue on, but this time not to do an addition. This project, currently ongoing, includes carving out 500 square feet from the old cranberry barn and constructing a modern kitchen and dining area. The challenge is to feature the interior attributes of the barn, such as the beams, low ceiling, fireplace, hand-cut nails, rustic flooring, etc. We believe that David is again skillfully meeting the challenge of balancing an antique structure with modern amenities. oh, and doing this while we are living in the house: maintaining a trim, clean periphery and making this a livable experience! We can't imagine relying on any one else for such work!
