About us
At Jean Brooks Landscapes, our goal is to create imaginative landscapes that enrich people’s lives. With over 20 years experience, we are a full-service, Cambridge-based company that provides design, construction and maintenance to our clients. Our projects range from urban rooftop and courtyard gardens, seaside residencies and country estates. We also design storefront/commercial properties around the community. We carry out every phase of a project, from presentation plans to installation and, most importantly, fine garden maintenance. The Jean Brooks team of 20 includes full-time designers, gardeners and builders, with backgrounds as diverse as landscape design, art history, studio art, horticulture and carpentry. The initial installation was beautiful and all the hardscaping (drive and retaining wall) were very well done.
However, after the first year, it was clear that the drainage engineering and plant selections were not well done.
Over half of the plants - including five large trees and 4 specimen yews - installed in the garden were dead in 6 months to one year.
They were replaced for free (cost of plants) but, the charge to install replacements was predictably high. Promises that the second set would work were made - and broken. Promises that if we paid the price to maintain the garden "...properly, to make sure everything is established and healthy for the first three years..." we would be rewarded with a low-maintenance garden from that point on.
At this writing, there are only 15% of the initial plants and trees surviving in the garden. The summer maintenance budget was ignored and I received a bill for five times what we agreed and signed a contract for in May. And, the reason given for this was - remarkably - that they had failed to perform any maintenance in June and had to do extra work to put things right. Overall, good design eye but, extremely inconsistent follow through and grossly overpriced maintenance coupled with an arrogance that is not deserved has made our experience with this company very unpleasant.
