My experience with D.K. Construction was absolutely MISERABLE. Please learn from my mistake and AVOID THIS COMPANY ENTIRELY. I got so frustrated that I eventually had to fire them from my project, a decision which I will never regret! I bought my first place back in June (a very tiny 1-bedroom, under 400 square feet), and intended to have it renovated before the start of grad school in the fall. I hired D.K. Construction in early July and explained to them my situation, and they assured me that the job would be completed far in advance of my deadline. Because my place is so small and because I had a full two months ahead of me, I did not include a finish date in my contract with them--HUGE MISTAKE! To make a long story short, my classes start next week, and my apartment is still in shambles! I decided to break my contract with D.K. Construction, and have just hired a new contractor to finish the job. This company clearly over-commits itself and makes promises it can't keep. In the two months that D.K. Construction was "working" on my place, they never put in a full day (I think their longest stretch was a five hour period during the initial demo), and everything was done haphazardly and without care. This story is already too long, so I will just highlight some of the major problems I ran into: - They failed to cover my hardwood floors prior to demolition, and I now have to get them refinished (not part of the original plan) - They NEVER cleaned up after themselves, despite NUMEROUS requests - Despite several reminders, they were not present on kitchen cabinet delivery day, so I was stranded on the sidewalk with my cabinets and no crew to help carry them up to the apartment (besides that, the apartment still had not been cleared from demo, so there was nowhere to put the cabinets--remember, this is not even a 400sq foot apartment!) - Dan King, the owner and main point of contact, disappears for days at a time while working on other projects and refuses to answer calls or respond to voicemails (Anecdote: after disappearing for three days in a pivotal week, I finally connected with Dan only to find him (a) unapologetic (he lied and told me he lost his phone), and (b) demanding early payment because he was having cashflow problems (mind you, we still had not reached the next milestone in our contract, so there was absolutely no reason for him to request another payment from me) TAKEAWAY: I basically never knew if Dan and his crew would show up to work on any given day. The only bit of talent these guys have is in making up excuses and fake stories for why they can't show up (although I often caught them in lies because they are not smart enough to coordinate stories with eachother!). The work that they were able to complete before I fired them was shoddy, and my new contractors will need to redo much of it. They are PATHOLOGICAL LIARS and POOR CRAFTSMEN and quite simply a HUGE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.
