Deck and Porch Service

Pleasant, knowledgeable person, had a good reference (I thought)
We agreed on scope and price and I was waiting on cabinet delivery.
I communicated with Phil via phone, email, and text when I had the cabinet delivery date and never got a response. I sensed he had other work and was trying to delay a response until I had no choice but to accept whatever dat.e he had.
I immediately found another contractor with better references and better pricing and  I notified Phil his services were no longer necessary.
I cannot recommend Phil based on the way he does business.

When you meet Phil Smith, he's very warm. He brings a computer with animations and designs. Out of three people I called, he was the only one available and promised that he would finish in a timely manner and used the best material. He guaranteed that his employees were insured and that he had insurance and a license. I left the country for a couple of months while the construction was going on and my husband was traveling for work a period of time.

When I did come back, I found that he made no attempt to seal off the rest of the house to prevent dust. They didn't bring their own toilet, so they were using my toilet in my home. There was an incredible amount of dust everywhere. I noticed the walls were not straight. Even the ceiling was somehow tilted. The windows were even sagging in the middle. I noticed there were always different workmen there.

He asked up front way more money than the legal amount to ask for. He used the fact that we were British against us. His workmen were smoking dope in our front yard. I even picked up one of the workmen from a rehab. I found drug testing kits in the basement that did not belong to us. The kitchen floor was tilted, and when I asked why he didn't do that, he said that it was impossible to do without re-leveling the entire house. I have a specific British stove called "aga" that we gave him specific instructions and dimensions on building a platform for the stove and we hired someone who specifically installs these stoves. Because of his incorrect installation of the platform, we had to have the stove installer come out a second time.

We had a contract, but he said there was a little mistake and asked for it back and then refused to bring the contract back to us. He then refused to provide one for the court. We discovered while the work was going that he didn't pull the permits and didn't get the inspections he needed to. The only thing he did legally was the licensed electrician he hired. The steps to our deck were so uneven, people have actually fallen off of them and injured themselves.

In the end, he simply stopped showing up for work because he said he didn't have any money. So I had to fire him and take him to court where he was found guilty, but he was unable to pay. I even hired a private inspector who recorded this for us to use in court. He said it was the worst job he had ever came across in all of his years doing work. He didn't insulate most parts of the basement. He did very shoddy work on our stove where it used to go up the chimney. He completely destroyed my grass by disposing of rubbish and paint. It was all so horrible.

He basically messed up all three. He structurally messed up a wall in our home. He was late three months and refused to finish the work even though we had paid him in full.
