I met with several electricians and Rick new the code better than the others. His price was a good 20% lower because I believe he knows exactly what has to be done.

He did what he said he was going to do. His quote was for $2800 and he included doing a bunch of stuff but when it came to the time to do what he told me he was going to do in his quote, he claimed that he could not do it. He did a couple of minor things that I could have done myself in 2 minutes and charged me an additional $300 and said we'll call it a wash so that didn't make me happy. I paid an additional $300, but he didn't do the job that he was supposed to do. He did tighten some boxes that wasn't part of his scope but he just took the screwdriver, nothing that was huge. There were some of the stuff that didn't work when he left so I called him back. When I showed him what was going on, he was like, he wanted me to stay away from him. He wouldn't start the job with me in the same room with him and he didn't want me to see what he was doing. It was like he wanted me to step away and just call him when he's done. After he left I checked what was going on and it looked like when he put in LED lights, I told him it was nice but it was basically just a $9 screw and bulb that looked like it was a lot of work but it was really just a screw and bulb. The reason why it didn't work was because it didn't work before he came so it tells me that all he did was put a bulb on it. He didn't replace my original plate. He had to change that and put a new one on, which he should have done in the first place and then it worked so there were little things like that that I didn't like. He came and I gave him the job because it was an emergency. Everyone else was backed up so I was stuck in a hard place. It was the only quote I got that saw the job. Everyone else that I spoke to over the phone didn't see it. He came in and quoted it at $2800 and I immediately thought we could start it. He came out, him and another guy, and they were here for about 2 1/2 days and did the job and they were very professional. He left with a knob and 2 wirings still part of my circuit in a cold area on the porch but that was part of the original job he was supposed to do. I still have that. He said when I want him to do that, he would just come back and do that and it would cost another $1,500, but I told him he didn't have to do that. It was fine, it's out in the cold, it won't heat up. The basement wiring needs to be cleaned up a little bit and I had gotten quotes from electricians that would clean up my basement wiring for between $500 and $700. He came in and gave me a quote for $1,800 just to clean up the wiring in the basement. His price was right when he gave it to me to do the job because it was the only price I got so I didn't have a choice. It was fine with me. I paid him. It was water under the bridge. He knows what he is doing, he did the job so I will probably use him again but do things a little differently.
Response from R. McCarthy Electrical
"I am sincerely sorry that you were not totally satisfied with the services that we performed at your residence. I did give you a quote for the work that needed to be done (customer had a small electrical fire in the attic) which was to replace knob and tube wiring and I also told you that it was a good faith estimate since some of the wiring that needed replacing was concealed. Unfortunately, we did get bogged down in the area containing the circuit that burned and because the one remaining area had recently been remodeled, but not rewired, it was going to exceed the original good faith estimate. Had you not been satisfied with my explanation, I wish that you had communicated this with me at the time as I do strive to keep my customers happy. Concerning not wanting you to watch us as we work, I must admit that this is true. When I looked at the fire you had asked me to temporarily splice the burned circuit so that it would work until I could return in a day or two to make it right and I couldn't; it would be dangerous and a code violation. When I returned to do my work I saw that you had gone into the attic and reconnected the burned circuit (directly above your children's bedroom) and that your work was dangerous and a code violation. Forgive me, but in situations like this I never want a customer watching me work for fear that they might feel that they can take on bigger electrical projects on their own. Wiring is certainly not a hobby and should always be left to qualified, licensed electricians. I am glad that the offending circuit, and a few others, were replaced. I also hope that you have someone replace the lone knob and tube circuit to your porch light before it causes you an issue. In the future, I will certainly try to communicate better to meet my customer's complete satisfaction. It was a pleasure to work with you and I would welcome the opportunity to work with you again."

Called McCarthy Electrical after seeing his listing on Angie's List and was looking for an electrician to take a look at a burned dryer outlet and a buzzing outlet/ lights not working in the master bath.  Rick was so nice when I called and described the problem and I was thrilled when he said he could be out to the house the next day, after another appointment, to take a look and to see if he could fix the problem.
He gave me an estimated window of time when he would be coming but was able to come a bit earlier, a pleasant surprise.  Upon his arrival, I showed him the various problem areas and in each case, he listened patiently to the problem, quickly assessed the various trouble areas and explained each issue to me.  He immediately fixed the items he could and for the specialty outlet and part that he did not have in his truck, he went to the supply house to get the part and came back promptly to complete the job.  Since he was at the house already, I asked him take a look at a couple other minor outlet/ receptacle issues which he kindly addressed quickly.
All in all, thrilled with Rick's knowledge and professionalism.  Most impressed with how quickly we were able to get on his schedule and thought the cost of service was certainly reasonable.
Would definitely use him again for electrical work and already referred him to my mother-in-law.

"It was a pleasure working with you. I always expedite matters of electrical safety and I'm just glad that we replaced your burned dryer outlet before it started a fire. Many people might not have noticed that slight burning smell but you were wise to act fast. I look forward to serving you again in the future. Best wishes."

Response from R. McCarthy Electrical
"So glad that you were able to get your dishwasher installed at last. I think that with the newer dishwashers I will only wire them in place going forward. These newer machines simply don't leave enough clearance for a junction box behind the unit. Just goes to show that we keep learning all the time in this industry. Happy dish washing!"
