We were a little late in getting the appointment set up, and these guys were booking quickly as late fall was quickly approaching, as well as the deadline to get the work done in time for the Mass Save rebate. Williams squeezed us in for the work just in time!! The quality of work was excellent. As we were relocating the heating system, Williams made sure any down time for heat/hot water was very limited, which was appreciated. They were very clean, and you could barely tell there was even a relocation.
One other topic I think worth noting: I pride myself on obsessively researching major projects. Initially, during the quote, Williams suggested a boiler once size up from the size I thought would be necessary, and I was worried this would cause a conflict. However, after explaining my thoughts Williams agreed without hesitation to put in the boiler I wanted (no guilt trip or offense), and it has worked out perfectly. I say this to mean that they are really happy to work with you, and explain their recommendations well, without belittling your non-plumber opinion. That, in my opinion, is a sign of excellent customer service.
These guys are great, and we will continue to use them without hesitation.
Not even 10 minutes later we got a call from the technician. We described the problem and he asked us to inspect a few things, after which he explained what he thought the issue was, and asked us if we wanted him to come out or if we wanted to wait until Monday. We asked him to come fix it ASAP. He was on site in under an hour.
He inspected the whole system and explained everything to us as he went along. He said that the leak was simply a result of a gasket cooling and shrinking a bit as the water in the pipe was no longer hot. He tightened a few bolts and that was fixed. He also explained that the aquastat needed to be replaced. After that he tried to start the boiler back up - no go, which was confusing because the fuel gauge on the oil tank read 3/4 full. We have 2 250 gallon tanks, only one of which has a gauge. He knocked on the other tank - sure enough it was empty. Only one of them was 3/4 full and it's valve was clogged, so the whole situation was apparently caused by us running out of fuel, while we actually had about 200 gallons still in the tank.
He hooked up what looked like bicycle pump to the other end of the fuel line and was eventually able to dislodge whatever was clogging up the valve, which allowed the fuel in the two tanks to equalize, and fuel to flow to the boiler again.
In all he was on site about 2 hours on a Saturday. We never discussed how much it was going to cost. With a 6 month old in the house, we just couldn't be without heat and hot water for the whole weekend, so we didn't really care too much what the fee would be. We were assuming around $500. We extremely happy to get the bill for only $210 the following week.
We don't have too much experience with the other aspects of William's Coal and Oil's business, but for Oil delivery and boiler service, we're very happy with them
Technician told me there was a bad sensor and it was overdue for a cleaning so that was performed as well. I called office and asked if we needed to call each year to schedule cleanings or if they automatically called us as we were also getting the auto deliveries of oil. Was told that they called us to schedule. In 2012 no one ever called to schedule and with day to day things, I didn't remember that preventive cleaning was never done.
In 2013, boiler stopped working late at night, I ended up having to open boiler myself and clean the oil crud that had accumulated on the sensor so it would fire up(technician previously had showed me). I got in running and called the next day to inquire about my cleaning, was told I would be contacted to set up a time. No one ever called back. Now in 2014 with winter coming, I just called to inquire as no one has still called me. I asked if it was up to me to call in for preventative maintenance and was told that and quot;noand quot; they will call us.
When I mentioned no one has called me in 3 years, she looked up address, then put me on hold ( I could hear another phone ringing in background). After quite a few minutes she came back and asked all over who I was and where I lived, finally looked us up and stated I needed a new contract and cleaning would cost me $267.00. I was very shocked and reminded her that I was told the annual cleaning were free with deliveries (oil price has always been slightly hire than others but figured this was the added cost for cleanings spread out over deliveries). Well needless to say, I've been duped and of course they just filled tank up today! I will be find a more reputable company for future business.
Again, the service tech were great, if you just want (like many do) oil deliveries and preventative cleanings, I'd steer clear of this company.
