I needed a spare key for my car and East Coast Chip Keys was open on Saturday so I decided to give them a shot. I live in Arlington where their store is. I wish that I hadn't. This was my first experience with a key with a chip. This locksmith is both a lousy locksmith and a lousy communicator. He made the new key for me but then told me that only my new copy and my factory original would work in my car. He had not mentioned that the modification had to be applied to all factory original keys. I then had to call my wife and have her come to the shop so that he could apply his change to her factory original key. At that point I thought I thought I was all set. I then drove to Belmont to run an errand. I locked the car with the lock button inside the car. When I finished my errand I found that my new key would not unlock my car. Fortunately my wife was carrying her factory original key which would unlock the car. I called the locksmith and drove back to his shop. He then spent about 15 minutes diagnosing and fixing the problem with my new key. He acted as if this problem was business as usual, although he did apologize. Over the next couple of weeks I noticed that my new copy would trigger the car alarm when I unlocked the car. This happened several times in the weeks just after I had the copy made. Initially I thought that the key was simply defective. I went back to the shop and discussed the problem. Long story short, the new key worked but I had to click it twice in the door lock: once to open the door and once to disable the alarm. This behavior is different from how the factory original keys work. The locksmith had not explained this difference in behavior to me.
Description of Work: The provider made a copy of my car key, which is the type of key that has a chip in it.

Response from East Coast Chip Keys
The simple reality of his particular circumstance is that his car was designed to primarily be opened with a remote NOT a mechanical key. This is something that the majority of the automotive industry is implementing with all automobiles (ie push button starts, smart keys ect..) as "convenience" features have gone mainstream. I took the time to explain to him that when using a mechanical key he will in fact have to turn it twice to the unlock position to disarm/bypass the alarm, which is the factory installed alarm bypass procedure. He stated he did not want to turn it twice and that is unacceptable. I advised him that the only way around this is to add another remote-head key similar to the one he already had. He did not want to spend the additional money for a remote even when I offered a discount! I'm sorry the customer does not like the new technology within his car, but I took extra time to explain the differences from his old car key to his new one and why the industry has made these changes. Despite my efforts, there is nothing further I can help him with. The key absolutely works to unlock the door, disarms the alarm(as the factory intended-by turning it to unlock twice) and starts the car as a factory non remote-head key would. I have been doing this since 2005 and have never had a negative review of my services. (check out yelp reviews as well as Google+) I am both part of ALOA Security Professionals Association as well as the ALA International Association of Investigative Locksmiths. This is an unfortunate circumstance, but, the customer is not always right. In this case despite my extensive efforts, and in my humble opinion, his intent was to simply be a jerk and wanted to hear nothing but his own voice. That said, I treated him with respect and courtesy despite him not returning the same! Unfortunately, I can't remove this review despite the fact that he signed up just to post this negative review because YELP, filtered his review and he's upset about it!. So, I have a customer that thinks over a month after getting the key (now 2 months after), it's unacceptable to turn the key to the unlock position twice (instead of once) despite being a factory specific design I have no control over. Further, I can not make him accept the fact that automotive technology is moving forward despite his unwillingness to accept it. At the end of the day, He got a working Master key for $65. The dealership quoted him over $300. ------------------------------------ In closing, I always guarantee that any key I make will work as the vehicle factory spec's are designed. This holds true for this customer and all future customers!! And despite this negative review, this customer is always welcome to return to upgrade to the remote-head key at the discount previously offered!!
