So we did. The flames kept coming.
We had him come back. He told us that he'd called the manufacturer, and that actually, the furnace shooting flames out the side was how it was engineered. Smelling BS, I called the manufacturer. The man I spoke to was incredulous, and insisted that flames coming out the side was a bad thing, and that no one at their company would have ever told anyone that it was perfectly within operational specifications, and that any plumber who believed it was useless.
So I called the HomeShield folks and insisted that they send out a new contractor. After a fight, they did.
Turns out, the furnace was missing a piece, a door that contains the flame, and needed to be cleaned (it hadn't been cleaned since it was installed three decades ago). Sure enough, that fixed the issue. This new plumber was furious that the previous guy would ever say something that dumb - and told me that it was the third time he'd had to come in behind Soumadel to fix a mistake like this.
They're awful, and I won't ever allow them to come to my home again. Thank goodness I trusted my gut instead of that yahoo.
