General Electric Appliances

The water dispenser in my refrigerator wasn't working. As it is a GE appliance, I first called the company to see if it was under warranty, and when I found out that it wasn't, they offered to send someone to look at it and explained that it would cost $95 for someone to come and provide an estimate, but if they recommended work and I had it done, I would only need to pay for parts and labor and the $95 would be refunded. I would also have a 5-year warranty on any parts since I would be buying it from GE. This seemed like a good deal so against my usual procedure, I agreed to have someone come and did not look at Angie's list first. They scheduled someone to come in 2 days, which I thought was fairly efficient. They gave a 4 hour window in which the person could come and I was called 20 minutes before he arrived. He explained that if any work needed to be done, it would be a minimum $190 labor charge. I thought that this should have been explained to me initially when I scheduled the visit as it could have impacted whether I scheduled it or not, hence a Good and not Excellent rating. It turned out to be a problem with the water filter which he fixed, however, which went under customer education and not a repair, so I ended up not having to pay this amount. I did buy 4 filters from him which were included in the total price I paid. I don't know if I would use GE again because I don't know how much labor should generally cost but a fixed minimum of $190 just for labor seemed high so it might depend on the particular problem. He seemed knowledgeable and I also asked him about a problem with the ice machine and he explained what was happening and what I should do about it. I was overall very pleased with the experience.
