Description of Work: JOB INVOLVED ADDING 2ND BATHROOM, REPLACING CEILINGS IN MOST OF CONDO, AND MISC. OTHER WORK. HIS ESTIMATE WAS HIGHER THAN MOST, BUT WE CHOSE HIM BECAUSE IT WAS MORE INCLUSIVE AND HE HAS A VERY DETAILED UP-FRONT DESIGN AND COSTING PROCESS (FOR WHICH WE PAID A RETAINER FEE) THAT IS SUPPOSED TO MINIMIZE SURPRISES. BEFORE FINAL CONTRACT WAS SIGNED HE INFORMED US JOB WOULD COST 30% MORE THAN ORIGINAL ESTIMATE. HE WOULD NOT COME DOWN ON ANY OF HIS COSTS, INCLUDING A HEFTY 25% OVERHEAD/PROFIT (WHICH APPLIED TO EVERYTHING, INCLUDING FIXTURES AND WORK OF SUBS) -- IT WAS ALL ABOUT WHAT WE WERE WILLING TO SACRIFICE. WE CANCELED OUR RETAINER (HE DID GIVE US AT LEAST A PORTION OF THE FEE BACK) AND HAD TO GIVE UP ON THE WHOLE JOB BECAUSE WE'RE EXPECTING A BABY AND HAD SPENT QUITE A BIT OF TIME ON THIS PROCESS. NOT A HAPPY EXPERIENCE. I'M SURE THEY DO GOOD QUALITY WORK IF MONEY IS OF NO CONCERN.
