One thing that really impresses me is Jimmy's use of technology. While others rely on just the traditional answering service method of getting back to customers, Jimmy is not afraid to hand out his cell phone number and/or email address. He'll call, text, and even email you, all from his smart phone. That might not seem like much in today's tech-savvy world, but you try getting ahold of a plumber when the stuff hits the proverbial fan and see how you like it when you have to leave a message and never hear back! I particularly like that he emails his invoices. Not having to search through physical paperwork is a godsend.
And while Jimmy is The Man, he's only ONE man. That means that occasionally, hey, you have to get in line and wait for his service. Sure, he has helpers, and those that I have met have all been very nice and respectable young men. But none are as experienced as Jimmy, and he has never sent one of them to the house to do a job by themself. (It's his business, after all.) I once had to reschedule a service call on the gas boiler three times for different reasons, but ALL of the reasons were justified. Oh, someone else's pipes froze? Yes, by all means, Jimmy, go deal with that first. So while your personal time may indeed be valuable on its own, Jimmy is trying to juggle EVERYONE'S time, while simultaneously preventing all of our homes from exploding, leaking, or freezing. That's a trade-off I'm willing to work with, because I know if I ever have an emergency, my call will be answered.
And let's be honest, not everything that happens is an emergency, right? I mean, sure, if you don't know anything about plumbing or heating, you'll probably freak out the first time something happens. I know I did. One time a red light came on (and stayed on!) and the boiler stopped firing. (It was the low water indicator.) Now, I'm no plumber, but I know how to throw a switch and turn a valve. Jimmy was able to talk me through the process of how to raise the water level in the boiler so that the indicator light would shut off. There was no charge for that 5-minute fix, and he'll never have to come out to the house for that dumb issue ever again! (What's that saying? Teach a man to fish...?)
I suspect that if you're reading this, you need a plumber. Jimmy has the experience and the know-how that you need to get the job done right. He's also a good resource for other service providers in related industries. (Need your chimney cleaned out? Get the number from Jimmy.) Seriously, you could do a lot worse than DM Plumbing and Heating. Give him a call and see for yourself!
Then, he gave us his opinion on the make and model of the water heater that he recommended to take the place of the old one. He told us that we would have to contact National Grid first. They would come and change the piping for the new system. When they were finished, he would come install the water heater.
National Grid was a bit of a hang up in delay of the project. Jimmy called them at one point to see if he could help move the project along, but they were tied up. As soon as they actually did come and install the necessary piping, Jimmy and his team came right in and installed the water heater. We had chosen a hybrid system called Eternal. This Eternal system was Jimmy?s recommendation. It gives us the best of a tank and tank-less water heating system. It runs at 98% efficiency and is Energy Star rated. We have already submitted our National Grid rebate for $800. Mass Save told us we could have had a zero interest loan if we lived in another town with another type municipal light department. (We are in Belmont.) That would have been good.
An additional benefit of using D.M. Plumbing is that Jimmy told us the water pressure coming into our home was way beyond the recommended level. He installed a three-quarter pressure reducing valve. This will really help with water consumption and that?s good if you live in the MWRA district.
My husband and I appreciate Jimmy?s attention to detail, his quick turn-around, and advice about equipment. I would definitely recommend D.M. Plumbing to anyone looking to install one of these tank-less water heating systems. We are very pleased with the job and the equipment.
