"also a great and easy person to work with. relaxed ina a difficult and stressful time - and we were happy to be able to respond so i usually quick."
Matt is a really nice guy and a total straight shooter who's goal is to develop long term relationships with his customers over maximizing the amount of money per job. He gave me a totally fair deal for work and parts way beyond what we originally discussed. The experience was so good that I'm writing a yelp review which is something I haven't done in years. I will absolutely call Matt and Beantown Drains when I have another plumbing issue.
I recommend him highly.
I spoke to Matt on the phone who said the next step would be to try acid in the drain. Matt came early the next day. Before trying the acid, he decided to try snaking one more time. This is all he does and he has been doing it for 10 years. He inspires great confidence. And yet, he still was not able to clear the line.
e. Even though he had already been at the apartment for a few hours, he didn't panic and he never gave up. He decided we should try and access the drain further down the line - so he cut a small hole in one of the bedroom walls to access the drain closer to the main. He was incredibly respectful of the tenants property, made no mess whatsoever, and after considerable effort was able to gain access to the drain, cut it open, and install a dandy (???). Before he proceeded with the acid, he called the building maintenance company to gain access to the basement. He opened all of the vents and tested whether putting water in the drain would cause any leaking from the vents. When it didn't he proceeded to slowly pour acid into the drain. He probably spent about an hour putting small amounts in, waiting for it to dissipate, and then putting more. He knew that the clog was at least 85 feet away as the 100 foot snake was not clearing the clog. The drain was filled with water the entire way down to the main, so he had to be very patient to get the acid into the drain.
Once he put in the acid, he said we needed to give it a few hours to work its way down the drain. He left to do another job and returned in a few hours, only to find the drain still filled with water all the way back to the bedroom wall. Most people would have been exasperated by then, but Matt just saw it as a challenge. More importantly he kept assuring me that although this was "the most stubborn drain he had seen in years", he would figure out how to get it unclogged.
Matt theorized that the clog was so big, that the acid was not able to completely remove it. He suggested we blow more water down the pipe, as the acid may have loosened the clog enough that a burst of pressure might just push the clog through. Because of the risks associated with this process (flooding other parts of the building), Matt was very cautious and planful as he prepared for this step. Thankfully, it worked and the problem was resolved.
In total, Matt and his crew spent almost ten hours at this apartment. They used an enormous number of pieces of equipment and spent about $100 on various parts and supplies. While I had been hoping when I made the first call that this would take an hour and cost me $150, I was prepared for a 4-figure bill. Having been at the apartment the entire time, I knew that not a second was wasted and that every effort that had been expended was necessary. Matt suggested that I pay him $500 as this would cover his actual costs, with no profit. While I love a bargain, this struck me as totally unfair. In the end we agreed to a $600 bill.
Over the years I have used hundreds of plumbers, electricians, etc. Every once in a while you meet someone who inspires great confidence and trust. Matt and his team fall into this category. I would rate them 10 out of 10 in every category you could measure and will be using them for all of my drain work in the future.
