We had other estimates but from the first, we were impressed by Dave's attention to detail which included explaining a potential ledge problem with the extended foundation. While another contractor simply included a statement that the cost could increase by 20%, Dave gave a very solid estimate and stuck to it. All of the work was of high quality and Dave's finish work is impeccable. From the pocket door to the bathroom, to the cedar lined window bench to the french doors to the deck, Dave had great suggestions and follow through. Throughout the project, he worked with us when we wanted modifications to the architect's original plans. He is incredibly creative, a great listener, honest and a pleasure to work with. Since this project, Dave totally redid a very out-dated kitchen again taking the time to understand our vision and the constraints of a small room. He made several suggestions to make the room brighter and to increase its functionality. His most recent project with us was to rebuild a 20+ year old deck. Again, great craftsmanship and creativity are evident. We totally trust and recommend Dave Ellis Construction and hope to be working with him again very soon. Since this project,
Description of Work: Dave Ellis has done 3 major renovations in our old house. In the initial project, he transformed a 10' by 10' sun room into a 19' by 10' bedroom with an 8'by 10' attached handicapped accessible full bath.

Dave had previously replaced all the windows in the house (16 of them) except two. This job was to replace the last two. In all cases his work was superb, on-time, and at-budget. In the past Dave has redone our kitchen, again to top standards. Dave is a craftsman who takes pride in his work. If you are not satisfied with something he is there to repair/replace it. We recommend him highly.
Description of Work: Installed several replacement windows, replaced interior and exterior trim.
Excellent. Dave is very professional, diligent and conscientious in his work. He's fair in pricing and compensation (almost to a fault!). I couldn't be happier with the quality of Dave's work and his willingness to address minor corrections and adjustments after the job is completed.
Description of Work: Dave has completed a number of jobs for me at my home in Bedford from repairs to minor construction and additions to my property.

Dave was professional and friendly throughout. We had a high-pressure situation. Family was growing by one and we needed to make a new kid's room and move our MBR from the 2nd to third floor. The third floor was a wreck, alternatively used as a storage space, playroom and dreary guest bedroom. Dave made it absolutely glorious. He also managed the plumber, electrician, plasterers and everyone else expertly and made sure the job was done on time to meet our very real deadline of the arrival of a child. Not only would i work with him again, but I'm eager to start the next project with him - the exterior of our home - in the near future.
Description of Work: Complete overhaul of 3rd floor of house - remodel of master bathroom, installation of built-ins, resizing and installing larger windows.

Dave is easy to work with as are the plumber and electrician who work with him regularly. Luckily our plans required only a few unexpected changes to the existing kitchen footprint (such as relocating a vent pipe) Dave explained what had to be done and gave a realistic timeframe for completing the change. We took a short vacation during the renovation project and Dave sent daily texts/photos to let us know how work was progressing.
Description of Work: Installed new kitchen cabinets, electrical and plumbing work associated with running gas line to kitchen for cooktop, some minor interior construction.

Dave and his sub's did solid work. He searched high and low to find a custom bulk head door to fit our space and to find siding with the odd reveal ours had. When he put a new set of stairs in the garage, he even made the railing inside the garage match the outside of the house. We had several issues come up during our construction, rotten sills for example, due to work the prior owner had done. Dave helped us address and repair each of these issues. When he repaired our roof he explained how water had been damaging it and what he had done to prevent future damage. Overall the project went as smoothly as any construction project can... still I would suggest a few things to anyone working with Dave. 1) Walk through the entire job with him in advance. We were part way through construction when we realized we could not move our basement stairs due to headroom clearance code issues. At that point it was too late to adjust the placement of the porch and front door so we still have the "walk into a closet door" entry we were trying to remedy by moving the stairs. 2) Have clear milestones. It is the nature of this kind of work, that people usually have different projects at different states at the same time. I had to call him a couple times and say things like... I need railings on the front steps before Halloween because of the trick-or-treaters. He put in the extra time and effort to make sure that happened. To avoid frustration I would set up those milestones in advance.
Description of Work: We had Dave work on a fairly complex project for us, we were adding a front porch, eliminating a second door, restructuring our front entry, bumping out a part of our house to make a fourth bedroom, building a hall, we needed to move our bulkhead and have two deck's rebuilt. We needed new basement poured under the new bedroom. I have known Dave for many, years, which is the main reason we chose him.

We hired Dave Ellis to remodel our kitchen. His price was higher than the other estimates we received but we chose him because he had a great reputation in town. We're at a loss to understand how he got such a great reputation because the work he did on our kitchen was amateurish. We fired him near the end of the project because the finish work (casing, baseboard, etc.) was done so poorly. That was the last straw, but just about everything else was done poorly also. One of the major problems in our old kitchen was that the floor wasn't flat or level. There was a fairly large hump in the floor due to an earlier renovation project. Dave assured us that he would level the floor, but it is not level. There is still a hump in the floor, though it is smaller than it used to be, and the new floor isn't flat. When I place a level across it I can see gaps as large as 3/8 of an inch under the level and it is obvious when you walk on the floor that it's not level or flat. We are going to have the floor removed and replaced in order to fix this. At nearly every point in the project Dave had to redo work. For example, when installing the cabinets he initially didn't install a panel for the refrigerator. He had to uninstall some of the cabinets and reinstall them with the panel. The panel was clearly shown on the plans, so there was no excuse for forgetting it. When he did install the panels they were too high above the finished floor and didn't touch the wall behind them. One of the panels was only secured with a few small nails which were shot through the face of the panel, leaving visible holes in the panel. Dave installed two doors in our kitchen. The entry door had to be installed twice because the first time it was installed it wasn't plumb. When the finished floor was installed we discovered that the door was installed too low and the door's sweep rubbed on top of the floor. Dave's solution was to cut the sweep's fingers so they didn't hit the floor. That caused the door to no longer be airtight so cold air rushed under it. Dave seemed surprised to learn that an exterior door must be airtight. The other door is an expensive Andersen sliding door. This door wasn't installed level or plumb and didn't operate correctly. The screen door wouldn't close because the door was so far out of whack. Our cabinets have countless dents and scratches in them because no care was taken to protect them after they were installed. I'm still removing dried adhesives from the countertops because they were not protected either. Whenever I would try to talk to Dave about my concerns he would make an excuse. The plumber didn't show up? He had rectal bleeding. The laborer couldn't manage to install a single piece of ductwork in two days? He had diarrhea. The doors didn't function correctly? Dave smashed his hand with a hammer. He even tried to blame his poor performance on his getting a divorce.
Description of Work: Remodeled kitchen, including new doors, floor and cabinets.

Response from DAVE ELLIS CONSTRUCTION
I have never ever had any problems with a client until this job! This client was constantly angry and stressed over everything in his life I imagine. I stopped daily to talk to him to try to find out why he was so very hard to work with. He admitted to me that he had wanted to do the work himself. Of course I am not a therapist so I don't understand the reason he was so harsh but I have to say that there was just no pleasing this man. Yes, we parted ways. I gave him money back so that he could hire someone to finish the kitchen. I saw this project through even though I wasn't working there and I must say I was relieved to be done with him. I haven't had a problem with a single client since then. I am very good at what I do. I am able to make creative solutions to every problem I've come across except for this client. Whew...
