Lisa returned the call in a short period of time, asked me a number of pertinent questions, suggested that it was likely dead but they'd confirm that, and indicated the possible range of options.  I liked the level of detail & specificity she conveyed, so I chose them to do the diagnostics. 
They work out of their home, and her partner, Giles, took a look at the machine quickly & essentially confirmed the likely diagnosis.  I agreed to leave it with them, approved the miminum charge (around $100), and waited for their call.  Lisa called me back & explained that the drive was indeed dead, but that there was good news: there was a second, equally large drive already installed in the machine (unbeknownst to me), although it was not formatted.  So, I had the option of having them simply formatting that drive, loading the operating system onto that one, recovering lost files from the first onto the second, and then configuring it to boot from the second drive automatically.  This was the least expensive solution, and within a day, I had my computer back for less than the cost of a new drive, running as if nothing had happened.
I've had the computer in daily use for at least a year since the repair, without a hiccup.
