Learned to be very specific with project scope. Put everything in writing.
Scott won the bid primarily because of his low price and his references. It was quite surprising the variance we received among the four contractors in terms of pricing for the project. We spoke with many of Scott?s references (old and recent) and all spoke very highly of Scott, his subcontractors, and the quality of work performed. Their rave reviews are what ultimately sealed the deal.
Do note that Scott subcontracts out everything, from framing, to plastering, insulation, tiling, painting, plumbing, electrician, etc. Every job was subbed out to a different team, whom Scott has been working with for many years. This can be a good thing as it helped keep the overall price of the project down and since Scott has worked with everyone for so long, he knew and trusted their quality of work. The downside is, as he will repeatedly remind you, he is at the mercy of these subcontractors for their time and schedule. If the plaster team cannot show up for another two weeks because they are on a different project with another contractor, you will have to wait. This can cause a little bit of stress in terms of timing and the estimated duration of the project. Sometimes, as with our plasters, they will send a team whom Scott has never seen before, which may introduce an additional
variant to the project. For us, everything worked out beyond what we could expect, and the quality as far as we can see has been top notch.
You may also see Scott?s son Kyle helping out on the project, whom is a great young man with good work ethic and experience. The father-son team will typically do all the finishing work at the end. Scott is very good with having the homeowner come up with a final check-list, and amend the list as they go along when you find additional items to add. The flexibility was nice and important to have, as inevitably there are always more items you would want finished along the way.
Overall I would rate the experience an A. You can?t find a better price on a major project as the one we did and also get the same level of quality work. Scott really delivered with his teams. He was very patient and flexible throughout, and even helped out on some unrelated bits around the house. We cannot be happier.
With regards to communication, Scott was always available to meet and discuss the project status or any questions I had. During the course of the project I changed my mind on some design aspects (i.e. slider in kitchen, window placement, gas fireplace insert, etc) and he was very receptive to my requests. We discussed the changes I wanted to make, he informed me how much it would cost (which was very fair) and we moved forward without wasting time. The job site was always clean and my neighbors privacy respected with regards to where trucks were parked which was challenging during a difficult winter. Not one neighbor complained, in fact I believe a few have already contacted him for projects as they were also impressed with his workmanship.
I've undergone major construction projects in the past on other homes with different contractors and there was always something that didn't go as planned. Not this time! The project went perfectly. Scott is a true professional who takes pride in his work and ensures that all aspects of the job are to the customer's complete satisfaction.
"As the contractor I finished that deck project on a Friday, the home owners were very pleased with the new deck and I was paid in full and was never asked for any type of revision, we cleaned the site as we always do and loaded the dumpster with the trash and I called the waste company for a pick up for Monday, the dumpster was full (level with the top) but over the weekend the home owners decided to demo an old shed that they had and over filled the dumpster with it, when the driver came for the pick up he had to discard some of the shed so it would be legal for the roadway, as the contractor I never overload a dumpster, as the contractor I did not leave behind any trash I do not do this ask any of my many references, I completed this project in July why the review in December? one selfish review has no reflection on my other ones, just read them !. would I do work for the home owners again, No !"
He was the low bid of three (substantially lower) and did stick to what he said he would do - this is a good thing. Finish work could be a bit better, but he takes pride in his work, returned to make an adjustment after completing the project, is honest, and takes one job at a time. You might want to clarify the project time line from start to finish, including contractor vacation days.
This is a very old house with many more issues than anticipated, and I couldn't do everything that I wanted to, but overall I am pleased
with the result.
They were very easy to deal with.
Scott Sorensen and his team are outstanding. Our expectations were high because we were referred through a mutual connection that we have worked with for the last seven years. We were not disappointed
Scott and his team accurately scoped the work, the time to complete, and checked back throughout the process to make sure that our expectations were met and the work product was what was envisioned. When looking at the price, time, and quality matrix this team knocked it out of the park on price and quality while reasonably meeting time schedules
We hired Scott to fix both interior and exterior issues in a fairly new home. He thought through the proposed solutions, using high quality yet cost effective materials. Scott is old school, harking back to the days when you could trust contractors and subcontractors in your home. They chose construction because they enjoyed and were good at it, not because they lacked other employment opportunities. They were trustworthy, respectful, and cleaned up the jobsite. There was no question as to their honesty. At the same time, Scott formalized our agreement and job scope in writing to ensure no surprises as the work progressed
If something was not Scott?s bailiwick, he would bring in subcontractors who were competitively priced, reliable, high quality, and accountable to Scott. Nothing is worse than getting in between a general and subcontractor. What a difference from our last project in which the contractor?s team was functionally illiterates at best
