To start, we had three companies out for an estimate. They all seemed reasonable, but we went with Burke because, for the same cost, they offered a vacuum system that would reduce the amount of dust created by sanding the floors. The fellows were extremely professional and did just what we'd hoped. The kitchen floors had seen a lot of abuse over the last 80+ years, but they came out beautifully. The remainder of the first floor was in better shape to start with -- but by no means good shape. Previous owners had dragged furniture across the floor leaving it bruised and darkened in long stretches. Someone later slapped a coat of polyurethane down over that finish, and not carefully -- leaving rings where the can sat in wet finish. But now, it looks nearly brand new. We had almost no clean up to do. Some dust has to be inevitable after such a big job, but it was a really easy, light dusting with the vacuum cleaner. Mr. Burke may have retired, and his son might have carried on the business locally. I'm posting this recommendation in hopes that he's still available. (We still have the second story to do, after all).
Description of Work: In two stages, we had the entire first floor of our home (pine/oak) and the treads of a staircase (birch) refinished. Some sections required replacement boards and holes to be filled. The floors were sanded and refinished with three coats of polyurethane. The staircase was done by hand.
