I asked them to show me the floor register to see how clean it looked, and I realized they hadn't actually vacuumed it out. "Oh I vacuumed that!". Then why was dust clinging to the grate and the filter? So I took the filter to clean and reattached it later. They finished the job (or so they thought), turned on the heating system, made sure it worked. I paid them the reduced amount and then left about five minutes later. Then the fan / blower for the heating system kicked on - and the dirt started flying. There were chunks of dirt and clouds of soot pouring from my heating vents into the house. They basically cut holes into my ducts, spun some wire brushes around, taped the holes up (without actually dusting down the vents to make sure the taped area was clean and the tape actually would attach!). Dirt in my bathroom all over the floor, the dust boards, the counters, the washer dryer, in my guestroom/ office and all over my desk and computer keyboard - you get the picture - not pretty.
I turned off the heat, called their office, spoke to a very compassionate and professional woman who said she would send out her best technician and the company owner for 830 Monday morning. She did offer to have a cleaning company come, but by now it was 4pm, and as I was expecting company for the weekend, I really couldn't wait to get it cleaned. So that was how I spent the remainder of the day and early evening. She then had to call back to say they would be at my house at 930, due to avoiding rush hour traffic . Fine.
I went to the basement to see how things looked and to clean the piece of furniture which they had moved. It seemed that they broke the legs of the cabinet right off. They moved it without taking the other items off the top, and then didn't place it back right - so whatever happened - they must have known it was broken. Great. but as I was expecting the owner to come on Monday, I figured it wasn't worth the phone call back to the office.
So, come Monday morning at 930 - no one is here. Apparently they had left a message saying they needed to pick up some equipment before coming. Well, they knew they were coming Friday afternoon, before close of business, and I supposed to be the first stop but they still were late due to equipment issues? They arrived at ten thirty, an hour late. No company owner, but another very nice technician named Rich and Victor, their best tech, whose English is as good as my Spanish (ie not very good).
They had to cut another hole because the first guys didn't cut it in the right place, they admitted it was still crazy dirty and told me my filter was really old and filthy and needed to be replaced. It was loaded with dirt now - unrecognizable from the ten minutes that the heating system ran on Friday. "You should really go buy a new one before you run this system" he said. REALLY?
They vacuumed up stuff the other guys were supposed to have done yet somehow managed to break off some plastic from their hose and it landed on the heating coils. So, when the heat came on, it started to melt. AWESOME. Now my house was smelling like burning Barbie dolls. I smelled it from outside. I left all the doors and windows open while running my furnace, just to basically cook it off. Nice. They kind of poo poo'd it and said they couldn't smell it anymore. But I could.
Lots of other confusion and miscommunication, but I know they tried to make it right. They gave me my check back, but I still ended up having to take another day off, cleaning up all kinds of soot from the vents (the reason I hired a company in the first place) and generally left frustrated, with a dirty, smelly house.
I know they tried to be professional and I didn't end up paying but it still meant that I had to clean up soot, and miss another day of work. So, not the best experience.
"Thank you very much for your review. We appreciate the detail as it helps us know exactly what to outline with our technicians to better their performance. We thank you for your review of the compassion of our Affordable office manager, Lori. Mr. Longo is sympathetic and has since taken intensive measures to improve performance that would not have been possible without the specificity of your review."
They discovered when they pulled out the dryer--a mobnstrously heavy appliance stacked on a washer in a very tight location--that the hose wasn't fully attached to the dryer! That's the reason lint had been blowing around and linens hadn't drying well. The men found the connecting part, attached it to the hose, and reconnected it properly. The dryer has been running like a champ ever since.
This unexpected repair was in addition to getting on our roof and cleaning out the top part of the hose. The office was great about renegotiating the unexpected repair. The cost was very reasonable. So this was a good experience. Many of our neighbors use them to clean out their dryers, so that's a recommendation in itself.
"Thank you very much for your kind review! We're glad you were able to take advantage of our presence in Amherst as we are located in Agawam."
"We appreciate your time in providing this review. We apologize for the inconvience and will gratefully use your review in pricing plans and improving the performance of our technicians."
"Thank you very much for your positive review and A rating! Our technicians will be encouraged to hear that you were receptive of their respectful choice to forego conversation that might extend the length of the job."
"Thank you very much for taking the time to provide an A rating! We are also excited to see you marked "yes" under "hire again." Don't hesitate to reach out if you may need carpet cleaning as well. Our technicians are certified and professional in that area as well."
Vincent and John were extremely pleasant and courteous. They explained several things they found to me, including recommending a better type of filter to use for my intake duct. They cleaned up after themselves and left no sign that they had been there, once they left.
They gave me a magnet and reminder card, which showed the next time I should schedule a cleaning.
I will absolutely use Affordable Duct Cleaning in the future and will recommend them to others.
