After determining the cause of my AC unit failing to receive power, (which turned out to be a bad breaker, by the way) he was able to get the unit up and running again. He removed the breaker box cover, which was located in a very tight spot (uncomfortable to get to), explaining that he hated to charge me a service fee, only to tell me I needed to call an electrician.
He also climbed up into my attic, which is very, very cramped and uncomfortable to get into - this was completely on his own initiative, as he further stated that he wanted to check every possible avenue, and do whatever he could for us to get our air up and running again.
Our water heater had stopped receiving power as well, (which we didn't know - as we'd been having problems with it lately) and we thought it might've burned out all together. I called a technician from Roto-Rooter, who came and discovered that the water heater wasn't getting power. He then offered to check the elements in the heater, to make sure the hadn't burned out. They were fine. He charged me about a hundred and ten dollars, and advised me to call an electrician, leaving me with a non-functioning water heater .
The same day, Jeremy discovered that the same breaker box that had the bad breaker which was affecting the AC unit also had a breaker that had been tripped, which was causing the water heater to have no power to it. I'm sure you're wondering why I didn't check the breaker box before calling people, and the answer is that I did, in fact, check the two breaker boxes I was aware of.
The one Jeremy found outside around the corner of the house, out of plain sight - I had no idea it existed. I've simply never had to open it and flip a breaker before. My house was added on to before I bought it, and was an old house to begin with. The electrical wiring in it is completely ridiculous. Honestly, it's a wonder the place hasn't gone up in smoke.
The breaker boxes I knew of (one in a closet in the master bedroom, and one in the outside storage area off the carport) contained labeled breakers for every area of the house, including the water heater and the AC unit, so I never dreamed there was a third box! I'm still unsure of the purpose of it, but I know it has to do with the add-on to the house, and the rerouting of wires.
Back to the point, after he got the power up and running to both the AC and the water heater, (which is not part of his job, mind you) , Jeremy proceeded to check the AC for proper operation. He found that it was mysteriously clogged from the inside out, presumably with fine dust, which according to him, would've caused the entire unit to break down very soon, if it hadn't been discovered.
He used a water hose with a high-pressure spray nozzle to thoroughly clean out the AC unit's coil, and the pressure ratings immediately dropped from well above normal levels into a perfectly acceptable range. He initially thought I might have a blockage in the line, and that I might need to flush all the refrigerant and start over, or that I might need an entirely new unit.
He added refrigerant, after having advised me that my AC was low on it, and telling me the cost up front. He left it completely up to me whether to add any at all, and how much I'd like him to add. He stated the price to me on a per-pound basis, and was honest about how he would determine how much the unit actually needed.
He was courteous and professional throughout, not complaining about the heat or the tight, cramped spaces he stuffed himself into while working on breaker boxes and the AC unit itself, which is surrounded by bushes and low-hanging tree limbs (which may be part of the problem...) He also kept a straight face when he found a breaker box I didn't know about, which is really priceless when dealing with a repairman, if you ask me ;)
He didn't mind my dog following him around, and he didn't mind my three year old handing him toys every time he walked through the middle of the house, which are also admirable qualities in a repairman, in my experience.
The bottom line, here, though, is that there were several instances when he could've lied to me, and didn't:
He could've charged me over two hundred dollars to put in a new breaker. He told me it was something I could do myself, if I decided I wanted to, and that if not, he'd be glad to get me a price estimate. It would've been easy for him to tell me that it was absolutely necessary for him to do it.
He could've pumped the AC unit full of refrigerant, and told me how much it would cost me after the fact, instead of before. If he had said it had to be full, I'd have had no way of knowing.
He could have, at any point, told me the AC unit needed to be replaced. I might not have bought one from him on the spot - I like to get a second opinion (and maybe a third!) when it comes to expenses that large, but he had no way of knowing I wouldn't have cut him a check then and there. Instead, he did what needed doing to get the one I've had for years up and running, almost as efficiently as new.
At one point, I asked him how much he'd charge me to put refrigerant in an old wall AC unit (like they have in some hotel rooms). He told me "by the time you pay me for working on that thing, it'd be cheaper to replace it." You can't beat that honesty and straightforwardness. Especially when it comes to home repair professionals.
I highly recommend this company, but especially this Service Technician; Jeremy Johnston, to anyone looking to diagnose and repair problems with their air conditioning and heating units in the Monroe and West Monroe areas. I made certain he left me with one of his cards, so that I can request him in the future, if I have any problems. You won't find a more honest AC service technician, or one who will more readily go that extra mile!
