One of our horses, a 3 yr old female, developed swelling on her face at approx 1 o'clock over her sinus / molar-premolar area. Initially it was thought to be an insect sting received while grazing. A call was placed to the clinic requesting a telephone consult w/Dr. Jessica Duncan or Dr. Chris Thomson (both have provided equine services within the past several months and both are excellent veterinarians). Within an hour, Dr. Duncan returned our call and, after listening to a description of the problem, suggested a regimen of Banamine and close monitoring of the situation. She also asked that we contact the clinic if the situation worsened or did not resolve in a day or two.
After several days of treatment with Banamine and essential oils, the swelling had not diminished so a call was placed to the clinic requesting another telephone consult w/Dr. Duncan. Dr. Duncan was off duty and within an hour Dr. Thomson returned out call. After a discussion of the situation, he suggested bringing the horse in to the clinic for an examination and testing. (Normally we have and quot;farm visitsand quot; by Drs. Duncan and Thomson). An appointment was made and the horse presented at the clinic for examination. Dr. Duncan was to be the attending veterinarian. She greeted us shortly after our arrival and, after sedating the horse, performed an in-depth examination of the face and inside the mouth, specifically the right molor/pre-molar teeth. She then provided a thorough explanation of her findings and suspicions, including a visual demonstration/explanation of the horse's teeth, and recommended further diagnostic testing to provide additional information. X-rays were obtained of the affected area, confirming her original suspicions, and we were provided a detailed review of the film of various aspects of the problem areas. Dr. Duncan outlined her treatment recommendations and expectations, including a and quot;best-case-worst-caseand quot; scenario.
She prescribed an intense 10 day treatment period of 2X a day doses of antibiotics with close monitoring of the affected area.
At this time, the treatments are still being administered with approximately 5 days of treatment remaining.
Several days after the office visit, clinic personnel contacted us via telephone for updates on progress / effectiveness of treatment
and requested we keep them informed of progress.
Drs. Thomson and Duncan are excellent, knowledgeable, caring veterinarians who provide a superior level of service. As previously mentioned, each doctor has provided and quot;farm visitand quot; services in the recent past, including annual examinations and vaccinations and castrations of male horses. They are friendly, cordial, caring professionals who encourage questions and discussion about any issues or concerns we, as owners, may have. The information they provide is thorough and has proven to be very accurate. In short, they are and quot;good peopleand quot; and a pleasure to deal with.
They have each earned our complete trust and loyalty for future services we may need.
I would highly recommend Montgomery Animal Hospital to anyone needing veterinary services for large or small animals.
