They're a pretty big outfit. Our landlord would have them come in the spring and the fall for servicing. They were fine. They came when they said.
I would use them again but they wouldn't be my first call.
I have been using them for many years. They were very good. They stand behind their work. They say if they don't fix it right the first time it is free. The workers I come in contact with are very professional.
My A/C stopped working late Saturday night, called "Help" first thing on Monday morning. A Technician/Gary came around 10am and went up on the attic. He found the problem within 10 min that the breaker in air handler needs to be replaced. They don't have new breaker on hand so I had to wait for the replacement until next day. In the mean time, Gary provided running repairs in order for A/C to work somehow. Thank God, we survived! Thanks much Gary!
Another Technician/David came next day around 3pm in a timely manner, and replaced with a new breaker. My attic was red-heat-hot at that time. I felt sorry for him but he completed his job quickly and professionally.
The details: I called HELP to get an estimate on replacing an HVAC system. I told the woman on the phone my heating system was completely broken and wanted to find out how much to replace, etc. She told me that it was $79.00 for someone to come out to my house. I questioned this for an estimate but was told it was their standard charge for anyone to go to the house. It was cold and we needed a new unit asap, so I agreed. (I had good friends who were customers on HELP's "Special List" and they had recommended HELP).
Eddie from HELP arrived on 12/10/2013 and met my husband. My husband showed him the attic access where the unit is and told Eddie, "Its completely shot. We know it needs to be replaced, we just want to know how much and what should be done." Eddie was up in the attic for ten minutes and when he finished, he came down in the house, completed his paperwork and charged my husband an additional $99.00 on top of the $79.00. My husband wrote him a check but called me after Eddie left and asked me about paying $178.00 for an estimate. I told him that I was quoted $79.00 to get an estimate and that I never agreed to pay $178.00 to get an estimate. I called HELP but the office was closed. I called the next day and spoke with Andy. I explained to him what happened, i.e., that I called for an estimate, was told it was $79.00, and the man charged my husband an additional $99.00. At that point I took the position that it had to have been some sort of misunderstanding. Andy looked up the order and told me that it had been set up as a work order, not an estimate and that is why the $79.00 charge was quoted to me. I explained that no work was authorized, nor performed on the system so I was confused as to what the $99.00 was for. Andy told me that Eddie was out in the field and he did not have the final paperwork on the job yet. He said he would have Eddie call me. I asked him to have Eddie call my husband since they had met and had the interaction with each other.
Eddie did call my husband that afternoon. When they spoke, my husband reiterated what he had told Eddie when he arrived (that the unit was totally shot and needed to be replaced). He told Eddie the fee for the estimate that HELP had quoted to me on the phone was $79.00. Eddie acknowledged that my husband told him the unit was shot and we needed a estimate and also stated that he performed NO work on the unit. My husband asked what the additional $99.00 was for and Eddie said it was their standard charge when looking at a unit. However, he apologized and said that HELP would have sent someone other than him if the call were for an estimate. He said it was all a misunderstanding and told my husband he would tear up the check. At this point this was more than I expected as I had agreed (though admittedly not happily) to pay $79.00 to get an estimate and didn't expect to be let out of that charge. I just wanted the $99.00 returned, as I had not agreed to pay that and nothing had been done to my unit. We decided to consider HELP to replace the HVAC system since they had been professional at that point. We received the estimate to replace the unit sometime after my husband's conversation with Eddie.
Unfortunately, my view that HELP was a professional company that would resolve such a misunderstanding and not charge for work not performed was short lived. About two weeks later, my husband told me HELP cashed the $178.00 check. I called to speak with someone and again got Andy. I reviewed the situation with him and told him that Eddie had told my husband he would tear up the check and Andy's response was "He didn't have the authority to do that." I told him that it was unethical to tell someone that its $79.00 to get an estimate and then charge them $178.00 once you are at their house. He said he would look into it but there was nothing he could do. I reiterated that no work had been authorized on the unit, nor done on the unit but it fell on deaf ears.
WARNING: we're in the peak of AC season down here. I wouldn't use them for any job considering this experience. Don't call HELP for an estimate. The $79.00 charge will turn into a lot more once they step foot in the house. I can only imagine what they would have done if we had hired them to replace the unit. I am certain that whatever price I had been quoted would have doubled upon completion.
