There are many recognizable symptoms of AC compressor failure. They include loud banging noises, hot air being continually circulated in your home despite running the AC at full blast, uneven airflow and cooling, and electrical issues like constant surges due to the compressor working overtime. Signs that your air conditioner capacitor is malfunctioning include a smell or smoke coming from the unit, a humming or banging noise when it starts, the system shutting off randomly, higher energy bills, and no cold air blowing out of the unit. Additionally, if your capacitor is bad, the air conditioner may not turn on at all. 

While 72 degrees is a comfortable setting for many people, it’s likely not the most efficient temperature setting for your air conditioning unit. By pushing the temperature up to 75 or 78 degrees, you stand to save money on your energy bill. That said, these temperatures may be too warm to be comfortable for some people and are definitely too warm for most people to sleep comfortably.

Diagnose whether your HVAC damper is bad by assessing airflow. For a manual damper, close it and run your system. Air should stop flowing through the associated vents. If you feel air, it’s likely a bad damper that requires repair or replacement. Automatic dampers should maintain your desired room temperature. If not, they may be faulty, and you may need to invest in some HVAC repair costs.
