I called for estimate on an exterior painting job. Donald the owner gave the estimate and after meeting him we believed he would be an honest hard worker with a lot of talent. On the first day of the job he asked for 1/3 money up front. Since we just met him off Craigslist we were unwilling to pay up front and I am so glad we didn't. We didn't want to be a financial burden on him so we agreed to purchase all the supplies (his and ours) for the job and pay him cash at the end of each work day. We also wanted to see what kind if work he produced and his work ethic before we committed to a contract. He showed up on time the first day and stayed busy all day. He got paid. The next day showed up late and stated way past his welcome (till 8:30 at night). He got paid. Still left a mess behind from painting 10 interior window trims over 2 days. We still had to pick up drop cloths and rehang cornice boards ourselves. That job should have been easily completed in 2 days. The third day he was late and only stated 4 hours pressure washing bricks. Called the next morning and he said he just can't work for us without a contract. We decided after seeing his work ethic over the 3 days and all the money he was paid and his supplies we covered that this company is a rip off. If nine hundred dollars for 1 man to do 2 1/2 days work and no out of pocket expenses is not enough then he will never be satisfied and we never want to be locked into a contract with that kind of company.
