Rentals - Cars
The car they gave me was slightly dirty and scratched inside. They sprayed so much air freshener in it I had to drive with the windows down for three days to avoid gagging. They dash panel was heat blistered so the instruments were hard to read. The radio had no display so it took a long time to find a radio station, and I never was able to successfully the balance and fade so that the sound was distributed evenly throughout the car. Brakes were squeaking on day 3, and the windshield wiper didn't lay flush, so there was a streak of un-wiped windshield. No cruise control, or power ANYTHING. Only 1/2 tank gas. Granted they noted it, and told me to come back with 1/2 tank, that is much more difficult than just filling it up.
This honestly was not THAT bad of a car - for a mid-90s econo-box that I would expect to get from a second-tier rental company like rent-a-wreck. But for paying $35/day I expect it to be new or like-new.
Additionally, there is almost no staff, so when you call you have a 66% chance (based on my informal survey or 6 different attempts to contact the office) of getting no one on the phone.
When I went to turn in the vehicle (0930 AM), there was literally no one at the office. There was another customer in the lobby who informed me they were both out and would be back shortly.
Once I was able to get a hold of the employees, they were courteous, and knowledgeable. They seemed, to me, to be a little bit on the "too laid back" side of professional, but there were no serious breaches of etiquette,
*Update*
About 4 days after I returned my vehicle, the branch manager called me, I assume based upon my poor review on this site. He seemed genuinely concerned about my negative experience. I told him my negative experience was based almost entirely on the quality of the vehicle. He said that unfortunately that happens sometimes in smaller communities. He offered me a $40 credit on my next rental. It is in their computer, coded to my name, all I have to do is tell them who I am next time I rent. That is basically 12% of my cost returned in the form of a credit. A nice gesture, but it is tied to future business, so not as nice as it could be. Still, based on this, I am raising responsiveness from an F to a C, and professionalism from an F to a D. This brings overall from a D to a C. Still not great, but at least they cared when I had a negative experience.
