MEDLIN CONSTRUCTION

He was really good. He did what he said would do and was here when he said he would be. He did a really good job.

Mr. Medlin received a check for the entire cost of construction from the insurance company on Aug 15, 2008 in the amount of $73,543.18. On Nov. 20, 2008 he asked for and received an additional $20,349.88. After obtaining 3 bids I chose Mr. Medlin for the job primarily because he was the president of the Home Builders Association in our area. In addition he told me he was a volunteer fireman and deacon of his church. I thought he would be an honest and trustworthy businessman. He did not offer a contract, references, proof of insurance or proof of licenses. He did not obtain the necessary building permits. Everything was to be done on trust...my trust. It is now 7 months later and the job is still very incomplete. My master bathroom, master closet/bathroom closet is totally gutted. There are no walls and there is a section of the ceiling missing which means there is no insulation. Given that it is winter and we have had a recent devastating ice storm, that has made the house much harder to heat. Framing for closets and doorways were not measured correctly and not square so there are obvious large gaps and lopsided doorways. Lighting fixtures and mirrors were not centered and there was insufficient preplanning in everything. Many, many things were redone to try to correct mistakes which has led to an enormous amount of wasted time. Trash and debris has littered my yard from the beginning. There is an open trailer of trash sitting in my front yard that has been untouched since the beginning of Nov and I am often having to retrieve blown trash from it. My carport and front porch are littered with an old toilet, leftover building materials, and a lot of broken glass from old picture windows that were left behind. Drywall and wood were cut inside the house and very near the unprotected a/c unit which became clogged with dust and shut down. The a/c repairman removed the fuses so that it could not be turned on again until repaired. Mr. Medlin replaced the fuses so that they could run the downstairs unit but someone turned the upstairs unit on also. The result was that the unit was severely damaged and will need to be replaced. The insurance company said the first of Jan that they could no longer pay for our hotel rooms because the job had gone on way too long. They had been assured that it would be finished and we would be home before Thanksgiving. My son's families and new first grandchild came to stay for Christmas and we were all forced to be in the hotel. At the very least Mr. Medlin should have paid for their hotel rooms but did not. We had to move back into the house with no furniture and everything else in boxes which have to be constantly shifted around. I was told the job would take 6-8 weeks to complete. 7 months later it is far from finished. Mr. Medlin has not accepted nor returned my calls. The damage to my home was enough trauma. Mr. Medlin has multiplied that trauma many times over.
