1. Punctuality and professionalism -- This should have been a 3-4 day job, but quickly turned into a three WEEK job. Communication was dismal; the worst communication I've ever experienced with a hired contractor in 20 years.
2. Price. They were more expensive than the competition, even though they were slow, had poor communication, and used lower quality materials. I hired them on the recommendation of a (regretful) friend.
3. Subcontracting. The owner explained to me that many of the communication and scheduling problems I experienced were due to their wood fence installer being a subcontractor. The resultant lack of accountability was obvious.
Start to finish, working with this company was a stressful, expensive, mess.
The gate was a disaster and we voided our contract with this company ... they kept our $700 downpayment which means we paid $700 for 4 old posts removed and 4 new ones put in. The extruded chain link will have to be replaced by another company.
We rejected the driveway gate when it arrived because: the vinyl on both vertical members was all bubbled up, the top horizontal member had a big line of brown paint on it, the lower horizontal member had a big scratch down to the metal. I called the company from which they got the gate and was told that it sounds like the black vinyl did not bond to the structural pipe.
When I went to talk to Mr Geddes he did agree to let us void our contract with his company but he said to me "It's just a gate".
Just a gate to him but a total of $1500 to us if we had the abysmal gate installed.
I called several local fencing companies in one day but Herb Geddes Fence Company truly did stand out immediately! From the moment Lynn answered the phone, I was impressed with her friendly voice, her obvious product knowledge and genuine interest in helping us with our fencing needs. When I got off the phone, I said to my husband, and quot;Gosh I hope they're not outrageously priced. I really WANT to work with them!and quot;
When Jeremy came out to measure, he was friendly, very clean-cut and he was patient with all of our questions. We promptly received the price via email and we were very pleased with their estimate!
They were not the lowest bid but the lowest bid told me 1) I didn't need a permit, 2) I didn't need to get prior approval from my HOA, 3) they could start the next day and 4) they needed 60% up front. RED FLAGS ALL AROUND!!! Also, a couple of other companies didn't even show up to our scheduled estimate appointments.
We went with Herb Geddes and I knew from the very start that it would be completed (not just set posts and disappear), it would be beautiful and it would be done correctly!! I also knew if there was a hiccup anywhere along the way, they would make it right.
I frequently find my high standards difficult for the average skilled trade provider to meet. Lucky for us, the gang at Herb Geddes Fence Company seems to function at that top-notch level on a daily basis!!
In our case, there was insufficient communication between us and the fence contractor when the job was discussed ... we assumed certain things and they assumed other things. So, we were not happy with the result when we saw the outcome. However, the company worked with us and fixed things to our satisfaction ... they proved themselves to be a reputable company that stands behind their work. We would definitely use them again.
