Deck did not pass building inspection. Hired another contractor to finish job.

Shoddy work, poor construction, sub-contractors hardly ever showed up; failed multiple inspections; nails stuck out of floor and benches, cuts on wood wasn't straight and was ragged due to use of a dull saw; steps were shallow and uneven, bolts were hammered instead of screwed in with a ratchet. Worst contractor ever. Plus. owner is a self-righteous pompous pig.
Response from DeckworX, Inc.
"1. Customer states: "Shoddy work, poor construction" TRUTH: Deck passed final inspection. The inspector said it was a really nice job. 2. Customer states: "Sub-contractors hardly ever showed up" TRUTH: The total time from start to finish was 38 days which included 14 rain days, 6 days waiting for inspections, one 3-day holiday weekend and 4 Sundays. We were there on ALL the other days. 3. Customer states: "Failed multiple inspections" TRUTH: The only inspections that failed were because rain had gotten into the footers and they can only be inspected when dry. 4. Customer states: "Nails stuck out of floor and benches" TRUTH: The 3 nails she's talking about were removed prior to the final inspection. 5. Customer states: "Steps shallow and uneven" TRUTH: The steps would not have passed inspection if they had not been properly built. 6. Customer states: "Bolts were hammered instead of screwed in with a ratchet" TRUTH: The bolts we used were carriage bolts, which were hammered through a pre-drilled hole and then fastened with a washer and nut on the other end. 7. Customer states: "Worst contractor ever" TRUTH: From the very beginning we went out of our way to work with and on behalf of this customer. We met with the engineer they hired to review plans three times and submitted them to the building department on their behalf. We met with zoning on their behalf. We interacted with the Home Owners Association on their behalf In the end, they got a really nice deck at a very good price. 8. Customer states: "Owner is a self-righteous pompous pig" TRUTH: This may actually be true, but I suspect this comment is just a reaction to my rejecting her advances and telling her I was happily married even if she wasn't. The fact is, we have multiple e-mails from this customer saying how happy they were with our work all the way through construction until it came time to pay us; THEN they thought everything was terrible. We had to sue them to get paid. This was the only time in our 35 years in business we ever took a customer to court."

Company was very quick to give us a bid, and very responsive when responding to questions. Owner was knowledgeable about the process and offered good advice. The price was in line with other bids that we received and the owner was willing to work with us on any questions or concerns that we had. The deck is well built and looks great. The work was done in a skilled manner. I gave the company a B for professionalism because I felt the communication on timing could have been a little better.
It was never clear when the work would be started, when they would be there etc. Some of the timing was due to waiting for a building permit, but even after that was secured, it was sometimes unclear when men would be working on the deck. I was also concerned with the preparation that was being done under the deck. I decided to have another contractor level/regrade the area under the deck. I was having concrete work done at my home at the same time and decided to have them work on the grading.
Overall I am pleased with the design and construction of the deck.

The workmanship and the materials were very poor - the clean up was poor and we were very disappointed in the whole project!
Response from DeckworX, Inc.
"We resurfaced the decks for (Member name removed) when the ground was already covered with snow and worked while it was still snowing. Although we cleaned up as best we could, some of the scrap was buried. We went back later and cleaned it all up. (Member name removed) primary complaint was that some of the grade stamps which are required by law were on the top side of the deck boards. We explained that this was normal: we always put the best side of the board up and sometimes this is the side with the stamp. I told (Member name removed) that, although the stamps fade over time, we would be happy to sand them down if he wanted us to. He declined. I assumed the matter was resolved."

The work was shoddy. The problems included: exposed nail heads and points, splintered wood, and poor fit of joints. The owner was contacted regarding these problems and simply offered excuses that his employee was going through some "tough times." Eventually the employee returned to grind down the nail head/points, but all other problems remained. We dropped additional communications based on the bad attitude of the owner.
Response from DeckworX, Inc.
"I fully admit the initial work was substandard and, yes, I did say that the worker on the job must have been having a bad day. It was not an excuse; the work just wasn't representative of his normal work. We did go back and correct the problems and the customer said he was completely satisfied. I thought the matter had been resolved. When I found that his review had been posted, I wrote a letter telling him I was sorry if I had misunderstood and that I would appreciate the opportunity to fix any problems that still existed. I have not heard back from him."
